  • quick rolled oats (organic)

Directions to Follow for Pumpkin Almond Butter Dog Treats

Firstly, preheat your oven to 350 degrees and line two cookie sheets with cooking parchment paper.

Secondly, in a medium bowl, combine the oats, flour, baking powder and cinnamon. Consequently, I prefer to use Ceylon cinnamon and here’s why. Therefore, if you have never tried Ceylon cinnamon, you and your dogs are in for a pleasant surprise.

Thirdly, in another medium bowl, combine the almond butter and pumpkin purée. You might want to make your own pumpkin puree rather than use store bought. In that case, check out this recipe at Dogtipper. However, whatever you do, do not use a can of pumpkin pie filling. It contains way too much sugar for your dog!

Next, slowly add the dry mixture to the wet mixture and mix well. Furthermore, you want the dough to have a play-doh consistency. So, you will knead it to completely mix the ingredients. In addition, add a little water if the dough is too dry. Or, add a little flour if the dough is too sticky.

Then, place a ball of dough on a parchment covered counter. In addition, place another piece of parchment paper on top of the dough ball. And, roll flat with a rolling pin. On the other hand, for this step, you can add some flour to your rolling pin. Therefore, leaving off the top layer of parchment paper.

After That…

Cut shapes in the dough using cookie cutters of your choice. I found small Fall cookie cutters at my local Michael’s store. So, I used the pumpkin and leaf shapes. In addition, I used a bone shaped cookie cutter.

Next, place the shapes on the prepared cookie sheets and bake in the oven for 10 to 12 minutes. Different ovens vary in cooking time, so definitely start checking at 10 minutes. If your dog prefers a softer treat, then do not bake as long. However, if your dog prefers a crunchier treat, then leave baking a little longer.

Lastly, remove the treats from the oven and let them thoroughly cool before sharing with your dog.

In Conclusion

Subsequently, you can keep these pumpkin almond butter dog treats in an airtight container in the refrigerator. In addition, you can store them in the freezer.

Notes

Just like when using peanut butter in dog treats, when using almond butter always check to make sure it doesn’t contain xylitol. Xylitol is an artificial sweetener that a few brands use, and it can be fatal to dogs. Check out this list for more information on which brands use xylitol in their products.
