My sweet Bella no longer gets to eat these yummy homemade peanut butter dog cookies. We discovered a couple of months ago that she is allergic to peanut butter. However, I created these homemade peanut butter dog cookies right before.

Therefore, this was the last time my sweet girl was able to eat peanut butter cookies for dogs.Occasionally I will put a teeny tiny bit of peanut butter on my finger for her to lick off. I am a peanut butter girl myself, so I can’t imagine going without. LOL!

However, I have always been fascinated with how much both of my dogs love peanut butter. In fact, I’m fascinated with how much, it seems, all dogs love the stuff. Whether eating homemade peanut butter dog cookies or eating it from a Kong, dogs are obsessed!

Why Do Dogs Love Peanut Butter?

So, it could be the taste. After all, peanut butter is filled with the fat, sugar, and salt that makes you crave it. Dogs love mouth-watering food. In addition, dogs and people are able to taste the same basic taste sensations.

Although dogs can taste sweet, salty, sour and bitter, more than likely, they don’t possess sweet tooth receptors. However, they enjoy the extra sugar that peanut butter provides, because it usually isn’t in their dog food.

On the other hand, it might be the aroma that causes dogs to go crazy for peanut butter. For instance, smell matters more to dogs than the way it tastes. The smellier it is, down the hatch it will go.

“The roasted aroma of peanut butter comes from proteins and fats that have been changed in the roasting. And, it probably smells a bit like caramelized meat.”

Dr. Susan Wynn, a veterinarian from BluePearl Specialty and Emergency Pet Hospital

According to Wynn, dogs have a natural instinct to “seek out certain chemicals that signal a nutrient-rich food. Peanut butter gives the smell of that.

When given in moderation, peanut butter can be an excellent source of protein, niacin, vitamins B and E and healthy fats. However, the only drawback to giving your dog peanut butter is double checking the label on the jar. Steer clear of peanut butter containing xylitol. This sweetener is toxic to dogs. Secondly, mix all of the ingredients together in a bowl, adding the milk last.

Thirdly, stir all of the ingredients together until they are moistened.

Then, use your hands to knead thoroughly into dough forming a dough ball.

Next, place the dough ball onto an oat or almond floured sheet of wax paper.

Use a rolling pin to roll out the dough ball to about an ⅛ of an inch thick.

After that, use any shape cookie cutter to cut the dough into cookies. I used small ones, because my fur babies are little. In addition, I wanted the honey ingredient to be served in a small portion.

Place the shapes on a cookie sheet lined with wax paper, a half inch apart.

Lastly, bake for 12 minutes. All ovens cook differently, so start checking them at about eight minutes. Also, if you want softer cookies, don’t bake as long. Or, if you want crunchier cookies, bake a little longer.

Let them thoroughly cool.

Notes

  • Dogs really enjoy the taste of raw honey.  A taste of honey as an occasional treat is fine. That said, feeding your pet more than one teaspoon of honey each day can impact their health negatively. This is because dogs and cats are carnivores and have teeth and a digestive system evolved for eating meat, not sweets. Too much honey can also result in tooth decay and in extra calories that lead to obesity. These cookies are small and the recipe makes 165 cookies, so the amount of honey is very little.
  • When using peanut butter in dog treats always check to make sure it doesn’t contain xylitol. Xylitol is an artificial sweetener that a few brands use and it can be fatal to dogs. Check out this list for more information on which brands use xylitol in their products.
