donuts for dogs

This dog treat recipe is inspired by the delightful children’s book, If You Give a Dog a DonutAs a kindergarten teacher, I love reading the If You Give… series of books to my students.

As a result, my kindergarteners would beg to hear them over and over. Their favorite, hands down, is always, If You Give a Dog a Donut.

I’m not sure why. Maybe because most kids just love dogs. Or, maybe because giving a dog a donut is such a weird idea.

Nonetheless, they love it and I love reading it to them.

If You Give a Dog a Donut

This is the seventh book in the If You Give…series by Laura Numeroff and Felicia Bond. The series shows different boys and girls busily getting stuff for different animals from a mouse to a moose.

If You Give a Dog a Donut is a home run from this author and illustrator team. Dogs, donuts, and baseball combined make this a delightful book to read to children.

The cheerful dog who first appeared in If You Give a Pig a Party stars in his very own book. If you give a dog a donut, he’ll ask for some apple juice to go with it.

When you give him the juice, he’ll drink it all up.

Then, before you can say “Woof”…

Dog is off on a backyard adventure!

So, just like the six books before, Numeroff follows her winning pattern for animals keeping their children busy.

When the donuts and apple juice snack is finished, this dog thinks of making his own. He keeps his child busy in the backyard picking apples.

So, apple-tossing reminds him of baseball-throwing and home runs turn into treasure hunts. Therefore, one thing leads to another until he’s reminded he’s thirsty for juice and hungry for donuts!

And speaking of donuts, when your doggo tastes these donuts for dogs, he’ll be ready for his own backyard adventure.

Add the yogurt to a shallow bowl and bacon bits to another shallow bowl.

Next, dip the top of the donut into the yogurt and then, sprinkle with bacon bits.

Lastly, place the donuts in the freezer to allow the yogurt to harden.

You can store the donuts in the freezer to keep the yogurt hardened. Another option for storing them is in the refrigerator. However, the yogurt will get a little sticky.

The best part of making these donuts for dogs is sharing them with your fur baby. You can serve them frozen or thawed out or straight from the refrigerator.

Do you have kiddos at home? A lot of great conversation can happen with this book as the guide.

Try talking to your child about playing with someone who is always changing his mind. You can ask them how they feel when someone has a big imagination and lots of energy.

In the book, the little boy gets the dog everything he asks for. Therefore, talk to your child about how everyone in the house helps the family dog with needs.

Let your child join in to make these donuts for your four-legged family member.

I’ve included a couple of activities that your child might enjoy to go along with the book.
