The death of a furry family member is heartbreaking for the household humans and dogs left behind. Sometimes it’s sudden, while sometimes family members can prepare themselves for the day. However, in either instance, it’s important to find meaningful ways to remember your dog.

Furthermore, each family member, including the furry ones, should find their own special way. Plus, the ways to remember your dog are as personal and creative as you want them to be.

Most importantly, recognize that memories are significant in your mourning. Therefore, memorializing your dog can provide a great sense of relief and help soften the pain.

In addition, when you remember your dog in a meaningful way, you are keeping a connection open.  Therefore, this can help in your healing process.

After I became an empty nester, Bella was my first puppy. It was just her and I for four years before Edward came into our lives. Then the three of us for, another two years, before my husband came into our lives. 

So, when Bella passed away at 13-years-old, I was pretty sure I was going to fall apart. The loss was so profound and deeply painful. Plus, I was confused and unsure why I was feeling the way I did. But as I’ve learned, there is no rule book or road map for this healing journey.

Remember Your Dog With 14 Memorial Ideas

Celebrating the memory of your dog can be a good way to establish closure. Furthermore, creating a legacy or a memorial is a great way to remember your dog.

Did your dog have a favorite space in the home or a spot at their favorite park? You can spend some time there to remember your dog. There really is no wrong way to memorialize your dog’s life and the experiences you shared with them.

Following is a compilation of 14 ways to remember your dog after they have passed away.

1. Have an Item of Jewelry Made

Any piece of jewelry may be a token of remembrance for your dog’s life. However, you can have keepsake pieces made to specifically memorialize your dog. For instance, a scanned image of your dog’s nose or paw can be engraved with your dog’s name.

You can search Etsy to find numerous shops that have a service for memorializing a dog with jewelry. In addition to nose or paw images, some sellers will incorporate your dog’s ashes or fur into the jewelry. Even a photograph can be made into a piece of jewelry.

2. Create a Memory Quilt

There are several options to think about when it comes to a memory quilt. For instance, a popular memory quilt is made from a collection of your favorite photos. However, you can have a simple quilt made with stitching of your dog’s name, dates, etc.  Lastly, you can use your dog’s clothing or blankets sewn together to make a sweet quilt.

3. Plant a Tree or Flowers

Planting a tree or flowers is a sweet way to honor your dog’s life.  Furthermore, this will provide you with a beautiful daily reminder of the memories shared with your dog. Did your dog have a favorite spot in your garden or an enjoyable digging place? You can choose one of those areas, or another special location outside, to plant something new.

We received, in the mail, the sweetest gesture from Bella’s cardiology veterinarian after she passed away. They sent a card notifying us about a donation for a tree to be planted in her memory. Shortly before she passed, a nearby forest fire destroyed numerous homes and vegetation. It’s been a comfort knowing a memorial tree in her name is breathing life back into that community.

4. Volunteering/Donating Time/Money to Shelters, Causes, and Organizations

There are so many ways to give back to honor your dog’s life. For instance, you can volunteer at a local animal shelter to love on dogs without a home. However, if time is an issue, you can sponsor a dog in need of a home.

In addition to volunteering, there are ways you can make gently used and monetary donations. For example, animal rescues are always in need of supplies. Therefore, you can make a gently used donation of your dog’s bed, toys, clothing, and leftover food.

When it comes to monetary donations, there are so many causes and organizations that rely on donations. This is a simple, yet eloquent way to memorialize your dog. Therefore, research and find a cause or organization that really speaks to your heart. For example, think about rescue shelters and service dog organizations.

Furthermore, you can create a scholarship or dog memorial fund. For instance, many veterinary students are able to fund their education through dog memorial gifts. Your donation will remember and honor your dog, while helping aspiring veterinarians follow their dreams.

Another idea would be to set up a fund for dog parents who can’t afford their care. For instance, check with your local veterinary offices to see if they have an “angel fund” program. Or, you can ask if you can set one up.

5. Compile a Memory Box

Creating a memory box is inexpensive and easy to compile all of your favorite memorabilia in one place. Plus, it’s a great way to involve the whole family. For instance, collect photographs, favorite toys and blankets, a collar and leash, and other keepsakes. Then, you can keep this memory box either displayed in the house or kept out of sight. This is a special way to have something concrete to revisit through the years.

In addition to a box with a lid, consider using a hanging shadow box. This can be placed somewhere special to be looked at often.  You can place items such as a photo, a paw print, a lock of fur, or a collar.

After my brother-in-law’s dog, Rudy passed, I gathered some things to put in a shadow box. Then, I arranged and attached them inside the shadow box. Plus, I wrapped the shadow box, put a bow on it, and gave it to him at Christmas.

6. Create an Outdoor Memorial

An outdoor memorial is a more traditional way to remember your dog. For instance, it is usually some type of marker above a home burial site. However, I suggest checking with your local government on any law pertaining to a backyard burial. After this, there are different choices you can make for marking the site.

For instance, having your dog’s name etched onto a headstone or a garden stone will be comforting. Some dog parents place a wooden bench with their dog’s name as a place to sit and remember. You can also plant a tree or flowers on top of the burial site. 

On the other hand, perhaps you went with cremation for your dog. Therefore, you can consider mixing your dog’s ashes with the soil in a favorite area. Then, you can use one of the ideas above for creating an outdoor memorial. Another option with ashes is incorporating them into a physical marker. For instance, there are services where you can mix your dog’s ashes with concrete.

Even if you elect to not have your dog’s ashes returned, you can create an outdoor memorial. Having something to physically enjoy can bring comfort and a place to remember your dog.

7. Put Together a Photo Album or Scrapbook

A creative memorial to remember your dog is putting together a photo album or scrapbook. You can go the traditional route or the digital route.  For instance, the traditional route would be putting together a physical photo album or scrapbook.

Therefore, you can involve the whole family, and let everyone choose their favorite photos from across the years. Then, purchase a photo album or scrapbook, stickers, and print the photos. An idea would be to make it into a timeline. For example, from puppy to grown in the sniff of a snoot. In addition, you can add labels with captions, and other memorabilia, such as dog tags.

On the other hand, we do live in a digital world. Therefore, we have numerous digitally taken photos on our phones to remind us of our fur babies. There are many options online to upload your photos into a print book or album. Plus, you can order extra copies for other family members. Furthermore, some services offer custom covers, lettering, and a variety of material options.

Whichever way you choose to create a photo memorial, viewing the photos will bring comfort while grieving. Viewing photos will always spark some joy while you remember your dog.

8. Hold a Memorial Service or Funeral for Your Dog

A memorial or funeral is an intentional action that can help start your healing process. Just like with humans, it’s perfectly valid with a dog, as a traditional way to say goodbye. In addition, whoever attends can share their own memories, and you’ll have comfort knowing you’re not alone.

However, it doesn’t have to be a public event. You can perform your own private service or ceremony. Therefore, it can be as simple as a few family members in the backyard, to several friends, too. 

As mentioned earlier, check with your local government on any law pertaining to a backyard burial.

9.  Cremation

Many dog parents choose cremation as an option for remembering as well as taking care of the remains. Therefore, there are a couple of ways cremation can take place. One is communal cremation, where several dog’s bodies are cremated at the same time.

However, you will not receive the ashes. So, if you want the ashes returned, the second way is to choose a private cremation. This usually costs a little more, but is worth it for many dog parents.

Then, you have several options as to what you do with the ashes. For example, the ashes can be kept in an urn or decorative box. Or, you can spread the ashes in a flower garden or somewhere special to you and your dog.

Most veterinarians offer this service in which you will have several options for how the ashes are returned. For instance, there are eco-friendly bags if you are planning to spread the ashes. 

However, there are many urn choices that come in various sizes, designs, and materials. For example, you can choose from wood, marble, metal, or ceramic. Plus, your dog’s name can be engraved on an urn.

When Bella passed away, I called my veterinarian to learn this is a service they offer. I took her there, wrapped in her favorite blanket. They took me to a private room, where I chose how I wanted her ashes returned to me. Then, they gave me the opportunity to sit in the room with her for as long as I needed. 

Later, they returned her ashes, in the beautiful wooden box I had chosen, with her name etched on it. In addition, I received  an imprint in plaster of her sweet little paw. So, cremation is a beautiful way to remember your dog.

10. Make Paw Prints

Many veterinarians will make a paw print for you as a part of their euthanasia service. They will also provide a paw print as a part of their cremation service, such as mine did. For instance, paw prints are often made in clay. So, if this isn’t mentioned during your veterinarian euthanasia or cremation appointment, be sure to ask.

However, another option is to get imprints yourself. For instance, you can do this while your dog is still alive, or even after they have passed. For example, use ink or paint on your dog’s paw, then place their paw on paper. 

I created an e-book with ideas on how to create art with a dog’s paw prints. Furthermore, this is such a fun bonding experience to do with your dog. I never realized, at the time, how much Bella’s paw prints would comfort me after she passed. Therefore, being able to look at your dog’s paw prints after they’ve passed can be a meaningful memorial.

11. Commission a Work of Art

There are many talented artists on Etsy who can create a one-of-a-kind remembrance piece. For instance, this could be a watercolor painting, sketch, or even a sculpture. Furthermore, the remembrance piece can even contain some of your dog’s fur or ashes.

However, another option is to find a local artist to create a custom piece that celebrates your dog. A few years before Bella passed, an artist friend painted a portrait of her for my birthday. This beautiful custom piece has brought me much comfort now that she’s gone.

Another idea is to take an art class where you can create a piece with your own hands. Art can be great therapy for your grief. Plus, the piece you create will be a unique memorial to your dog.

Furthermore, a custom work of art can be a beautiful way to display your dog, and bring comfort. I have the painting of Bella displayed on a shelf along with her urn, and paw print. It truly brings me comfort.

12. Get a Tattoo of Your Pet

Many dog parents honor their dogs in a more permanent way. For instance, a portrait, caricature, paw print, or nose print tattoo are very popular. In addition, other tattoo remembrance ideas include your dog’s name or their silhouette.

This Etsy artist creates beautiful custom, minimalistic line art for a tattoo.  For instance, a drawing of your dog’s ears will be sent to you. Then, you can take it to a tattoo artist.

Regardless of what type of tattoo you choose, it is one way to keep your dog’s memory close.

13. Window Decals

Car and truck window decals are a great way to memorialize your dog. For instance, this Etsy shop creates custom decals/stickers in the image of your dog. However, you can use them on other smooth surfaces, such as laptops.

In addition, there are creative message options you can choose to display.  While some dog parents may list their dog’s name and dates on the decals, others may not. For instance, some may only display the image of their dog. Yet, others may display a message that reads “I miss my Morkie”, or “Honk if you love Huskies.”

So, anything goes, just choose something you’re comfortable with displaying. This is a great way to honor the life of your dog.

Petsies is a company  that creates custom made pet “lookalikes”. For instance, they create custom stuffed animals in the image of your fur baby. But, why stop with a custom pet plush creation.

Petsies also offers bobbleheads, golf headcovers, pajamas, socks, photo blankets and pillows, magnets, keychains, and ornaments. So many sweet ways to remember your dog, and give yourself some comfort during the grieving process.

In Conclusion

So, there is just no single way to remember your dog when creating a meaningful memorial.  There is no road map or rulebook for your healing journey, either. Therefore, your memories are important, and they will bring you deep comfort through the years.

In addition, don’t be afraid to try one of these meaningful ways to remember your dog. For instance, you’ll feel much better, and it will keep a special connection to your beloved dog.

The first series article justifies grief as real for humans when coping with the loss of a dog. However, grief is also real for our other dog/dogs in the household. Therefore, this article will explore helping a grieving dog deal with the loss of a companion.

While our dog/dogs may not fully grasp the significance of death, it’s clear that they grieve. So, helping a grieving dog makes it especially hard on us. For instance, while grieving over one dog, we must understand how the loss affects our other dog/dogs. 

Therefore, keep in mind that the loss can be overwhelming for them. In addition, our other dog/dogs may experience distress due to our sorrow. So, helping a grieving dog can be difficult. According to Lynn Buzhardt, DVM, pets, especially dogs, respond to loss much like human toddlers.

“They may not totally understand the concept of death as an everlasting separation. But, they do recognize and feel a current sense of loss.”

After Bella’s passing last May, I was very much aware of how lost Edward was. Honestly, I was lost at the thought of helping a grieving dog, while my heart was so broken.

Furthermore, I had no idea how long he might grieve. Bella was 12 when she passed, and Edward was 10. I really wouldn’t say they were a bonded pair. But, her presence sure made him calmer.

So, I did notice some changes in his behavior. However, before helping a grieving dog, it’s important to know the signs that indicate grieving. 

Helping a Grieving Dog – Know the Behavioral Changes

Just like humans, each dog will process a sense of loss differently. So, when helping a grieving dog, you may not see all of these changes. In fact, you may see the opposite of what I list here:

• Appetite Change (more, less, and speed of eating)
• Lethargy and depression
• Separation anxiety
• Vocalization (frequency and volume)
• Accidents in the house
• Sleeping (increased, decreased, or different locations)
• Behavior issues – acting out
• Personality changes
• Aggression
• Territoriality
• Affection (increased, decreased, clingy/needy, or withdrawn)

According to a 2016 New Zealand study, dogs experience behavior changes when a companion animal dies. Plus, depending on the behavior, it can last between two and six months.

Affectionate behavior is one of the most common behaviors to see a change in. Furthermore, the study shows that 74% of dogs show this behavior change. Of those, 61% are more demanding of attention, or more clingy, or needy.

Let’s take a closer look at a few of these other possible behavioral changes. 

Appetite Changes

Many dogs lose their appetite, either not eating or eating less following the loss of a furry friend. This is especially true if the deceased dog was the dominant one. So, without the alpha dog to initiate mealtime, there is an interruption to the routine. Furthermore, 30% of dogs experience appetite loss after losing a companion, according to the New Zealand (NZ) study.

Vocalization Changes

There can be a variation in vocal changes. For instance, a dog may begin barking more than normal. However, there can also be a decrease in barking. For example, a dog may usually bark at the postman, then it suddenly comes to a stop.

Or, a dog may begin barking more for no apparent reason. However, vocalization changes will be more like howling, whimpering, and whining.

Sleeping Changes

Some dogs begin sleeping more than usual. While other dogs will be restless and awake more. Furthermore, the NZ study shows that 30% of grieving dogs nap more.

In addition, a dog may change the location of where they habitually sleep. For instance, they may relocate to where their companion once slept, or an unusual place altogether.

Personality Changes

Being more clingy with parents is very common for dogs after losing a furry friend. In fact, the NZ study shows about 60% of dogs cling more to their humans. They become unsure of their role in the household.

Opposite of clinginess is becoming withdrawn. For example a dog may lack interest in play time, or they may hide away from everyone.

A few other personality changes to take note of:

• Pacing constantly
• Sulking
• Separation anxiety
• Destructiveness
• Potty accidents

Helping a Grieving Dog – How to

When helping a grieving dog, it’s very important to respect the fact that dogs do indeed grieve. Plus, it’s important to understand that they process everything emotionally and intuitively. Therefore, their grieving process is often very difficult for them. For instance, their sense of loss is so profoundly emotional.

I do have some suggestions for helping a grieving dog but first, consider a vet visit. For instance, ensure there is no relation between a grief symptom and a physical problem.

If there are no physical problems, here are a few tips you can try for comforting your dog. And, y’all, I know some of these are hard, because you are dealing with your own grief. I’ve been there, and still there some days. But, hear me when I say, when you are helping a grieving dog, you are healing, too!

10 Tips to Help Your Dog Deal With Grief

1 – Consider allowing your dog to see and smell their companion’s body after death. 

For instance, this would be in the event of a natural death or having to put a dog down. Your dog may have no obvious reaction. In fact, most dogs sniff and walk away. However, it may help with comprehension that there is no need to search for their companion.

My Bella died suddenly from either a stroke or a heart attack in front of us. Edward was there, too. It was obvious he was aware something had happened to her. So, we wrapped her in a blanket, leaving her head exposed, and placed her in her bed. We did this so Edward could go to her on his own and sniff. He did, but it was unclear if he realized she was gone.

After an hour, we moved her with her bed to the garage, and Edward saw this. Then, the next day, I left her at my veterinarian office for cremation services. Later, Edward became anxious, whining, and scratching at the garage door. It was obvious that he thought Bella was out there in the garage.

So, I took him into the garage, and he spent about 15 minutes searching and sniffing. When he scratched on the car door, I let him in it, so he could be assured she wasn’t there. Once he was content that she was not in the garage, we went back inside. He never searched for her inside the house.

2 – Closely monitor and recognize the grief. 

The process of grieving in humans isn’t well understood, let alone in dogs. So, it’s important to monitor your dog for signs of a distress reaction. 

Furthermore, when respecting your dog’s grief, you’re honoring that what they are going through is real. In other words, you are letting them know you understand and are there for them.

3 – Maintain consistency, routines, and bonding.

Sticking to your dog’s normal routine will help with feeling secure. For instance, you are reassuring your dog that all is well by being consistent. Furthermore, dogs in general will do better when they know the expectation from one day to the next.

Therefore, keep mealtimes, exercise, walks, playtime, grooming, bedtime, and other daily activities on a consistent schedule. In consistency with mealtimes, be sure to keep your dog’s diet the same. Your dog may not have much of an appetite in the beginning. But, continue to offer the same food at the same time each day.

In addition, be sure to use your dog’s hunger to help him get his appetite back. It’s tempting to want to use treats to entice your dog to eat, but try to refrain. Furthermore, if your dog doesn’t regain an appetite after several days, make an appointment with the vet. This will rule out a stress-induced health problem.

Most importantly, continue bonding with your dog. For example, go on special outings, or snuggle often on the couch. Plus, add more exercise and stimulation to your dog’s life. In fact, getting outside is going to be good for both of you during this time of loss.

4 – Be sympathetic without intensifying your dog’s grief.

For instance, hovering and playing the “you poor baby” game isn’t helpful. It will just intensify the grief. So, be sympathetic with words such as, “You’re okay, or I’m here for you.” But, don’t feel sorry for your dog in any kind of dramatic way.

5 – Think twice before introducing a new dog into the family right away.

There really is no way to know how long to wait before adding a new furry member.  For instance, each situation will be different. However, don’t expect miracles to happen immediately if you get a new dog too soon. It may not be the answer to help with your dog’s grief, yet.

Try looking at how we as humans react to other humans passing away. In other words, we don’t rush out to find another person to replace the one who just died. Furthermore, you and your dog need time to process your grief over losing a furry family member.

One last thought to consider here… 

There will come a right time to welcome a new dog into your home and heart. So, when this happens, consider letting your dog help you choose the new family member.

6 – Help your dog make new memories.

Dogs live in the moment and are very capable and willing to be fully present for us. On the other hand, time is a relative concept in the life of a dog. So, sometimes the moments aren’t right now but yesterday, or last week, or last month. Furthermore, the imprints of the past often stay with them.

So, it is our job to help them erase any sadness and replace it with happy memories. I mentioned above to continue bonding with your dog. When doing this, maybe add in some brand new activities to help create some new memories.

7 – Try not to inadvertently reward your dog’s depression.

This is tricky, because it comes naturally to comfort a grieving dog with rewards. However, giving attention to unwanted behavior can reinforce it. Not that depression itself is the unwanted behavior, but the distress reaction to depression might be. For instance, you don’t want to reward a lack of appetite, anxiety, inactivity, or other types of distress reaction.

Therefore, try distracting your dog with healthy activities that provide opportunities for positive behavior reinforcement. For example, go for a walk, give a gentle massage, play a game of fetch, or exercise together.

Furthermore, a brain game, or a mind-challenging play session around the house could be a good distraction. Plus, this is a good time to introduce new, healthy snacks such as freeze dried meat treats.

8 – Allow furry family members to establish their own revised social structure.

If you happen to have a multi-pet household, then you know how they relate to each other. So, when one of the furry family members dies, it creates temporary instability within the group. Furthermore, this can result in conflicts with a lot of growling, barking, hissing, or attacking.

Therefore, it is natural for this to be disturbing for the human family members. However, unless your pets become a danger to each other, let them reestablish group dynamics on their own.

If the group conflict behavior doesn’t subside as they settle into their new normal, then consult your veterinarian. In addition, you can consult a veterinary behaviorist for guidance on how to resolve the conflict issue.

9. Watch how you outwardly display your grief.

Your dog can become very anxious and upset with human dramatic, emotional displays of grief. Therefore, encourage family members to be sensitive to your dog’s state of mind. Plus, take care that you personally do not grieve dramatically in front of your dog. However, you can seek comfort from your dog, but try not to cause additional stress.

10. Patience is key.

Lastly, your dog desperately needs your patience during this grieving season. Just like with humans, there is no time frame. In other words, it may take weeks, or even months for your dog to emerge from grief. So, the best thing you can do is honor your dog’s grief process. For instance, allow your dog the time it takes to make sense of it all with your help.

In Conclusion

So, helping a grieving dog deal with their loss of a companion takes you being observant. As noted above, dogs demonstrate their grief in different ways. However, I only listed a few ways. Therefore, it’s important to note any change in your surviving dog’s behavior.

In addition, the most important way in helping a grieving dog is to give lots of love and attention. Plus, try new activities to do together. The goal is to find things to share with your dog while you both mourn.

Remember it’s normal for you and your surviving pets to mourn the loss of a furry family member.

Hands down, the most difficult thing about living with a 4-legged family member is the goodbye. But, somewhere between hello and goodbye, there is so much love. It’s that love you have to draw strength from when coping with the loss of a dog.

Since May, my strength to overcome Bella’s passing has come from 12 years of mutual love. Losing her has been a heartbreaking experience, leaving behind a profound sense of emptiness and loss for me. Furthermore, coping with the loss of a dog has no boundaries.

In fact, many dog parents compare coping with the loss of a dog to losing a family member. Others compare it to losing a close friend. I’m with the first group here… and the pain has been overwhelming. I believe it’s because the bond between dogs and their humans is a strong one.

When it comes to coping with the loss of a dog, it’s important to allow healing time. Furthermore, recognizing and accepting that your dog is gone is the first step towards healing. Healing will happen when you go through the pain.

Therefore, take the time to work through all of your feelings. It’s important to not hold it in, or healing won’t happen. So, take time to release your emotions in your own way.

Why Coping With the Loss of a Dog is Hard

First of all, many dog owners perceive their furry companions to be their soulmates. Some might call them a special heart dog. Regardless of what we call them, these fur babies are very cherished and loved.

For instance, dogs accept us for who we are! Furthermore, it’s that unconditional love they provide us with that makes us appreciate sharing life with them.

So, it’s normal to feel a sinking feeling of depression, maybe even desperation, after losing a dog. For instance, dogs become very much a part of the family unit. Therefore, dogs and their humans form a state of balance, living together day in and day out.

For us dog parents, a dog is not “just a dog”, but a definite family member. For instance, they bring companionship, fun, and joy to our lives. A dog can add structure to our day, in addition to keeping us active and social.

 In fact, they can even provide a sense of meaning or purpose. However, when a dog accident, aging, or some terminal illness results in death, the balance is off kilter. In addition, whether sharing one year or 15 years, the balance of life together is gone.

Secondly, coping with the loss of a dog is hard because grief isn’t something most of us learn how to get through. Instead, we learn how to avoid it and stop crying. However, this is not healthy!

Although loss is inevitable when sharing life with dogs, there are healthy ways to cope with the pain. In addition, there are healthy ways to come to terms with the grief of losing a furry family member.

Coping With the Loss of a Dog – 1st, Share With Others

“Unsealed grief puts a lock on your heart. It’s so important for people to realize that the key to unlocking your heart is to face the guilt and grief. Now, facing it is often very, very hard for people. Grief is meant to be shared. It’s meant to be expressed in positive, healing ways rather than stuffing it.”

According to Nancy, finding support from others is an important first step when dealing with pet loss. However, she adds, make sure those others understand what it means to lose a beloved animal.

Furthermore, Nancy explains, we need support from people who truly understand, so that we can comfortably share, express, and process our grief.

Although coping with the loss of a dog is different for each person, it’s not any less painful.  Furthermore, many people find it hard to express their feelings. For instance, not everyone around them understands the depth of their pain.

More times than not, people who are not dog lovers just don’t understand grieving a dog. In fact, they wonder why coping with the loss of a dog is such a big deal.

Tips for When Others Devalue Your Loss

It’s a fact that dog loss is not appreciated by everyone. Therefore, this fact can make grieving for the loss of a dog more difficult. For instance, some people assume that dog loss shouldn’t hurt as much as human loss. While others somehow believe it’s inappropriate to grieve for a dog.

It’s important to realize that they may not understand because they don’t have a dog of their own. Therefore, they are unable to appreciate the companionship and love that a dog can provide. 

Following are a few tips for dealing with those who devalue your loss…

• Don’t argue with others about whether your grief is appropriate or not.
• Accept the fact that the best support may come from outside your usual circle of family and friends.
• Seek out others who have lost pets. They can better appreciate the magnitude of your loss. In addition, they may be able to suggest ways of getting through the grieving process.

Join a Support Group

Therefore, it’s important to surround yourself with supportive family members or friends.  However, sometimes that support is hard to find from them. So instead seek out like-minded people who have been through coping with the loss of a dog.

Heidi McBain, a licensed professional counselor based in Texas, suggests starting with social media and online groups. She also says that private therapy and support groups offer a safe place. For instance you can open up and connect with others going through similar experiences.

So if you aren’t finding support from people closest to you, then consider finding it from unknown people. In other words, join a pet loss group where others are compassionate and understanding of your grief.

For instance, a great place to start is the AKC Pet Loss Support Group on Facebook. This group gives the opportunity to heal by sharing thoughts, memories, and support with other dog lovers.

In addition, another online safe place to consider is the Rainbow Bridge Pet Loss Support Center. This site offers a pet loss forum as well as a pet loss chat room. Furthermore, there is a wealth of information for coping with the loss of a dog. There is even a section of pet loss hotline phone numbers with websites.

Coping With the Loss of a Dog – 2nd, Embrace Self-Love

After allowing yourself to feel and express your grief, you need to embrace self-love and self-compassion. For instance, recognize that your feelings are normal. Grief is a natural process in relationship to loss. There’s absolutely nothing wrong with you, and you’re NOT crazy!

Y’all, your fur baby knew this about you, so believe in yourself. Give yourself that self-love and self-compassion. Embrace the journey of dog loss, and work through transformational grief.

When you do this, it will lead to hope, healing, growth, and resilience. Therefore, when you grow through your grief, you honor your pet. Furthermore, you find meaning.

Please don’t judge yourself so harshly for the intense, overwhelming sense of loss when your dog dies. I know our society tells us that we should just get over it. They are wrong! 

Seeking Professional Help

Furthermore, sometimes embracing self-love is seeking professional help. It might just be one phone call, but it might be the first step in the healing process.

For instance, if you’re overcome with grief and it’s touching every aspect of your life, then consider counseling.

“Maybe people feel they can no longer function. They’re spending a lot of time crying and depressed and unable to keep up with their regular routine. This reaction is normal. When we experience the loss of a loved one, we do strange things. For example, perhaps we put the orange juice in the cabinet instead of the refrigerator. Then, we might find the orange juice hours or days later.”

Ann Beyke, MA, LPC, Pet Loss Grief Counselor

Ann suggests using a resource like Psychology Today to find a counselor you feel comfortable with. Also, she says to look for counselor listings that have a picture of them with their animal companion. For instance, this can be an indicator that they understand pet loss and grief, she says.

In addition, Ann mentions finding a pet loss grief specialist before needing one can be beneficial. Therefore, you can talk through things such as anticipatory grief, hospice care, at-home euthanasia and other concerns.

More Healthy Ways For Coping With the Loss of a Dog 

It’s important to understand that sorrow and grief are normal and natural responses to death. Coping with the loss of a dog is no different than coping with the loss of friends and loved ones.

In addition, it’s important to understand that all grief, whether for humans or animals, takes time to process. However, there are healthy ways to cope with the pain.  As mentioned above, the first two healthy ways are sharing your grief with others and embracing self love.

Following are a few more suggestions…

• Don’t let anyone tell you how to feel! Furthermore, don’t tell yourself how to feel either. Your grief is yours, so no one else can tell you when it’s time to “move on”. Nor can they tell you to “get over it.” Plus, you can’t tell yourself that! It’s okay to let yourself feel whatever you feel, whether it’s anger, sadness, or even joy. For instance, it’s okay to laugh and feel joy in memories. You’re entitled to do this without embarrassment or judgement, and it’s okay to let go when you’re ready.
• Rituals can help with healing. For example, a funeral may help you and your family openly express your feelings. Who cares if other people think it’s inappropriate! You do what feels right for you!
• Create a legacy or a memorial. For instance, plant a tree in memory of your pet, or compile a photo album or scrapbook. More ideas will follow in this three part series on coping with the loss of a dog.
• Looking after yourself goes hand in hand with embracing self love. The stress of losing a dog can quickly deplete your energy and emotional states. It’s important to look after your physical and emotional needs. Furthermore, this will help you get through this difficult time. So, spend time face to face with people who care about you, and eat a healthy diet. In addition, get plenty of sleep, and exercise regularly to release endorphins and help boost your mood.
• If other pets are in the home, try to maintain a normal routine. Surviving pets can also experience loss when a dog dies, or they may become distressed by your sorrow. Therefore, maintain their daily routines, or even increase exercise and play times. For instance this will be beneficial for them and can also help to elevate your mood and outlook. The Grieving Process Comes in Stages

Whether coping with human loss or pet loss, grieving is an individual experience. Plus, there is no “normal” timetable. For some dog parents, feeling better happens in weeks or months. However, for other dog parents, the grieving process takes years.

So, the key here is that it’s a process. The process has to naturally unfold. Therefore, it’s important to be patient with yourself and let it.

Elisabeth Kübler-Ross pioneered the first research on what we experience when grieving. She identified five stages of grief that everyone goes through after losing a loved one.

Those stages are:

• Denial
• Anger
• Bargaining
• Depression
• Acceptance

Elisabeth found that not everybody goes through all of the stages in the same way. Plus, some will not go through them in perfect order. Furthermore, she pointed out years later that the stages of grief are non-linear. She also says to not expect a predictable progression.

Many grieving dog parents report feeling as if their emotions go up and down. Therefore, they wonder whether they will ever get over the loss. Sadly, the answer is that we never really “get over” loss. However, we only learn how to better cope with it. So, the only sure way to deal with grief is to go through it and deal with it.

Stage 1: Denial

Nothing can prepare you for the death of your fur baby; not even a long illness. For instance, when death knocks, whether expected or unexpected, a feeling of shock and deep sadness follows.

“In the denial stage, you are not living in ‘actual’ reality, rather, you are living in a ‘preferable’ reality. Interestingly, it is denial and shock that help you cope and survive the grief event. Denial aids in pacing your feelings of grief. Think of it as your body’s natural defense mechanism saying, ‘Hey, there’s only so much I can handle at once.’”

Therefore, denial helps us to manage the painful feelings at an unconscious level one piece at a time. It helps provide a reprieve from the intense pain.

Stage 2: Anger

First of all, anger is simply a symptom of pain. Plus, it can take on different forms during the grieving process. For instance, there is anger with self, with God, with others, and with just the whole situation.

Therefore, anger is a sign of pain against the unfairness of life. It’s important to accept the anger for what it is. In addition, it’s important to realize there are healthy ways to handle it.

For example, a healthy way to deal with anger would be to talk about it. Other ways could be physical, such as running, engaging in a sport, or punching a pillow and yelling.

Furthermore, Elisabeth explains that guilt is often part of the anger stage, and accompanies the bargaining stage. She says that although guilt is considered normal during the grieving process, it’s possibly the most painful.

Most importantly, it’s important to not let the guilt get out of hand. Furthermore, it’s unproductive to mentally torture yourself with the “coulda, woulda, shoulda.” Instead, it is far more productive to cherish the good memories. So, when guilt raises its ugly head, shift your focus to positive thoughts.

Stage 3: Bargaining

Bargaining means to “negotiate the terms and conditions of a transaction.” However, it’s not a business deal we are coping with. Instead, we are coping with the threat of loss and the actual loss.

For instance, bargaining can show up early in anticipatory grief. Anticipatory grief is also known as “pre-grieving.” Furthermore, it is the acknowledgment of impending death. Therefore, this anticipation leads to several emotions, such as shock, hope, fear, frustration, and anxiety. You can read more about anticipatory grief, here.

During this anticipation of death, we may bargain and even hope for a different outcome involving our dog. For example, we may bargain for our dog to not have cancer, or suffer from the disease process. Then, we may bargain for our dogs’ passing to be peaceful.

Once death occurs, bargaining may look different. It then involves hoping that we will see our dog again in the future. We may bargain for our dog to watch over us. Or, we may bargain for them to be in a better place. Furthermore, we may bargain for our other household pets to be spared from death.

At some point, as bargaining subsides, our mind reaches the clear conclusion that our dog is truly gone.

Stage 4: Depression

Once the initial shock and anger subsides, the loss becomes more and more tangible. Furthermore, we now will delve deeper into the present state. It is here that our grief will enter a deeper level, focusing on the emptiness sensation.

Plus, it is at this stage where it becomes crystal clear that our dog will never come back. Therefore, feelings of apathy and exhaustion may take over. Although it appears similar to clinical depression, it’s a very normal response to a loss.

In addition, sadness and depression must be experienced deep to the core for healing to happen. Therefore, it’s important to learn to accept it rather than push it away or mask it.

“Invite your depression to pull up a chair with you in front of the fire, and sit with it, without looking for a way to escape. Allow the sadness and emptiness to cleanse you and help you explore your loss in its entirety.”

As we get stronger in our grief process, depression will eventually leave. However, it doesn’t mean it won’t pay a visit every now and then.

Stage 5: Acceptance

While acceptance may appear to provide a sense of closure, it doesn’t mean we’ve reached the journey’s end. For instance, we really never get over our dog’s death, we just get through the grief process.

“Many people mistakenly believe that ‘acceptance’ means we are ‘cured’ or ‘all right’ with the loss. But this isn’t the case at all. The loss will forever be a part of us, though we will feel it more sometimes than others. Acceptance simply means we are ready to try and move on – to accommodate ourselves to this world without our loved one.”

Therefore, acceptance entails recognizing the loss and learning to live with it or come to peace with it. Although we may feel a little guilty, we start having more good days than bad.

For instance, our energies are no longer focusing on the loss, but investing in life again. Although our grief may seem a distant memory, it can make a comeback out of nowhere. However, at this point it may feel almost bittersweet compared to the raw sensations of the earliest stages.

In Conclusion

So, coping with the loss of a dog is hard! However, please know that the hard feelings you are experiencing now will become more tolerable with time. Furthermore, death doesn’t represent the whole relationship you had with your dog.

I got to have Bella for 12 precious years. Although 12 years is a good amount of living for a dog, I still wanted more! A lot happens in the lifetime of a dog… a lot happens in 12 years of a person’s life.

In the 12 years with Bella, I had so many different experiences. And through it all, she was there. She was so much more than just a dog. She was truly family. So it’s a beautiful thing to grieve deeply for a four-legged family member. It simply means the bond shared was something special.

Although there is a limit on time with our dogs, we willingly give our hearts to them anyway.  We do it because it’s worth it. Furthermore, the joy outweighs the inconvenience and exasperation. Plus in the end, the joy outweighs the heartache.

And, oh how my heart aches! Bella, you were my favorite hello and my hardest goodbye. Goodbye, sweet baby. You were such a good girl. Thank you for all of the joy.

Does your dog watch your every move as you eat your breakfast? My two dogs do! Actually they watch my every move at every meal time, but there’s something about the smell of bacon. Therefore, I created a recipe to make bacon cheddar waffles for dogs to appease those begging eyes.

However, it only works momentarily! Haha! Mainly because Bella and Edward love them and eat them in about two seconds flat! Secondly because they are treats and dogs shouldn’t be fed an abundance of treats.

These bacon cheddar waffles for dogs are so easy to make, too! Plus, what dog doesn’t love bacon and cheese? The second I say, “woofles”, my dogs are turning circles and beating me to the refrigerator. 

Have you ever heard of the word, woofles for dog waffles? I hadn’t until one of my readers introduced it to me. In a comment on a post for sweet potato dog waffles, Deana says she calls them woofles. She let me know her dog, Dexter gets rambunctious hearing the word and LOVES the sweet potato waffles.

So, in honor of Deana and Dex, these bacon cheddar waffles for dogs are called Bacon Cheddar Woofles. On a side note, the word, woofles, is now a part of Bella and Edward’s “known” vocabulary.

Main Ingredients in Bacon Cheddar Waffles for Dogs

So, of course the bacon and cheese are the main ingredients in these bacon cheddar waffles for dogs. Maybe bacon is unhealthy, but it’s not dangerous or unsafe for your dog. Nor is cheese unsafe or dangerous for your dog.

In fact, they’re not even named in the ASPCA’s list of “people” foods to avoid feeding your pets. Furthermore, bacon and cheese are ingredients in an abundance of dog treats and some dog foods.

However, both of these “people” foods should only be given in small quantities. For instance, bacon is an incredibly rich and fatty food with high salt content. Plus, cheese is high in calories.

Therefore, too much fatty, salty foods, high in calories can lead to obesity or heart-related diseases. Furthermore, both can cause pancreatitis if given in large quantities.

Some dogs are especially sensitive to fatty foods which can prove to be too much for their stomach. Plus, some dogs are lactose intolerant and can’t eat cheese, milk, or dairy products.  

It’s important to understand that these dairy products aren’t toxic. However, lactose intolerant dogs, like humans, don’t have the digestive juices necessary to process it. 

You will know if your dog is lactose intolerant, because they will have diarrhea and a tummy ache. Be sure to talk to your vet if you feel like your dog is indeed lactose intolerant. Furthermore, if your dog suffers from pancreatitis, then stay away from cheese. 

So, the key here is to only give your dog these two ingredients in small quantities. You’re in luck with these bacon cheddar waffles for dogs, because there are only small amounts of each ingredient. Furthermore, giving your dog bacon and cheese as ingredients in treats or food is the healthiest option.

Let’s Make Bacon Cheddar Woofles

The smell from these bacon cheddar waffles will make you want to give them a taste. So, go ahead! I did. However, I always taste the treats I make for my fur babies.  Bacon Cheddar Woofles have a soft, chewy consistency. But, they are a little bland for our taste buds, because they do not have that sweet or salty factor. 

Ingredients for Bacon Cheddar Woofles

• egg
• water
• unsweetened applesauce
• oat flour
• bacon
• cheese

Putting the Recipe Together

First, cook the bacon, either in a frying pan, microwave, or in the oven. I personally prefer cooking bacon in the oven. I line a baking sheet with foil and place the bacon flat in a row. Then, I cook it until it is crispy.

Secondly, beat an egg with a fork in a medium bowl. Then, add the water and unsweetened applesauce, and blend together.

Thirdly, add the oat flour to the wet mixture, and blend with a spoon until well combined. The batter will be a little lumpy and have a cake-like consistency.

Then, use a spoon to blend in the bacon and cheese.

Next, heat a waffle maker according to your brand’s instructions. I used a Dash mini waffle maker. I just love this little waffle maker for making waffles for my fur babies. It’s the perfect size.

Once heated, spray coconut oil on the top and bottom metal plates to grease them. To clarify, there is actually a spray can of coconut oil located with the other oil spray cans. However, you can also use the coconut oil in a jar and spread it over the metal plates.

Then, it is up to you as to what size you want to make your waffles. For instance, scoop about a tablespoon of batter per waffle. This is what I did, and it allowed me to put two to three scoops on the iron. As a result, this recipe made 21 small waffles. I have two small dogs, so these were the perfect size for them.

Next, cook the waffles until golden brown. My waffle maker has a light that turns on when the lid is closed. Then, when it turns off, the waffles are a nice golden brown.

After that, remove the waffles from the heat and allow to thoroughly cool before serving to your dog. 

Lastly, you can store the waffles in a ziplock baggie in the refrigerator for up to a week. In addition, you can freeze them for up to two to three weeks.

To Sum Up…

Sharing with your fur baby is the absolute best part of making homemade treats. For instance, it’s always a fun bonding experience. Mine are underfoot while I tell them all about the yummy treats I’m making for them.

Bacon Cheddar Woofles

These are doggy waffles! The smell of bacon and cheese cooking on the waffle iron will have your dog turning in circles waiting for them to finish cooking. You can never go wrong with bacon and cheese as a treat. Now you can serve it in a fun way!

Servings 21 small waffle treats

Calories 34kcal

Ingredients

• 1 egg
• ⅛ cup water
• ½ cup unsweetened applesauce
• 1 cup oat flour
• ½ cup shredded mild cheddar cheese
• 3 slices cooked bacon (or ⅓ cup bacon pieces)

Instructions

• Heat a waffle maker according to your brand’s instructions. (I used a Dash mini waffle maker.)
• In a medium bowl, beat an egg with a fork. Then, add the water and unsweetened applesauce and blend together.
• Add the oat flour to the egg, water, and unsweetened applesauce mixture. Blend with a spoon until well combined. The consistency will be a cake-like batter and a little lumpy.
• Cook bacon in a frying pan, microwave, or in the oven.
• Blend in the cheese and bacon using a spoon.
• Scoop about a tablespoon of batter three to four different times, placing separately on the metal plates of the waffle maker. Repeat this process until you run out of batter.
• Cook until golden brown. (The light on my waffle maker turns on when the lid is closed and turns off when the waffles are ready.)
• Remove the waffles from the heat and allow to cool thoroughly. (I cooled mine on a cookie cooling rack.)
• Store in a zip-lock baggie in the refrigerator for up to a week. You can also freeze for up to two to three weeks.

8 Tips for Winter Walks with Dogs

Winter walks with dogs have their challenges, but can be done in a fun and safe way. For instance, paying attention to surroundings and using common sense can ensure a safe and active winter walk. 

Plus, dog parents should take precautions before heading out on frigid days. For example, bundle up to avoid getting sick and wear proper footwear to avoid injury.

Winter walks with dogs can be enjoyable, or at least bearable, and safe when following these eight tips.

1- Walk During the Warmest Part of the Day

Check the weather before heading outside, and plan your walk around the warmest time of day. For instance, the warmest time of the day is usually mid-afternoon, 3 p.m. more specifically.

Therefore, limit the time on outdoor potty breaks and save the exercise walk for the mid-afternoon. Furthermore, it’s important to follow a few cold temperature guidelines for dogs.

According to PetMD, temperatures shouldn’t become a problem for most dogs until they fall below 45 degrees Fahrenheit. For instance, at this point some cold-averse dogs might begin to feel uncomfortable.

Furthermore, PetMD suggests these cold temperature guidelines for dogs:

• When temperatures drop below 32 degrees Fahrenheit – pay attention to the well-being of small breed dogs, dogs with thin coats, and/or very young, old or sick dogs.
• Once temperatures drop under 20 degrees Fahrenheit – be aware that any dog could potentially develop cold-associated health problems such as hypothermia and frostbite.

In addition, if the temperature is above freezing, you still have to take other weather factors into account. For instance, wind chill, precipitation, how sunny it is, snow or ice are important to consider.

So, bottom line, figure out the warmest time of the day to take your dog for a winter walk.

2- Shorten the Walk

Even the warmest time of the day could still be extremely cold, so consider a shorter walk. Plus, a shorter walk is better than no walk at all. For instance, take your dog out more frequently, but limit the time outside to just a few minutes.

Therefore, limiting the amount of time your dog spends outdoors will help prevent hypothermia or frostbite. Furthermore, keep an eye on your dog’s behavior for signs of being too cold.

For instance, watch for these signs:

• whining
• picking up paws
• shivering
• licking paws
• slowing down
• stopping
• looking for somewhere to burrow
• anxious behaviors

So, if you see any of these signs, head indoors with your dog!

3- Bundle Up!

Seriously, it is very important for YOU to be properly bundled up for your comfort and for safety. For instance, wear comfortable shoes that won’t slip and slide on ice and snow. If your dog tends to pull, you’ll be glad to have on the proper footwear.

Furthermore, keep hands warm with mittens or gloves so that you don’t lose your grip on the leash. So, whether it’s 50 or 5 degrees, make sure you’re appropriately dressed for you and your dog’s safety.

Remember, the best way you can protect your dog during winter weather is to keep yourself protected first.

4- Bundle Up Your Dog, Too! 

Speaking of bundling up, this goes for your dog, too! Of course, several breeds, such as Malamutes and Huskies can venture out in just their fur. 

However, many dogs will be more comfortable and even safer with a sweater or coat to protect them. For instance, small dogs and dogs with short hair should bundle up. But, they aren’t the only ones! Dogs that are very young or old and dogs with any illness or physical disability should, too.

Furthermore, have extra sweaters or coats on hand in case the one your dog has on gets wet. For instance, a wet dog coat or sweater can actually make your dog colder outside than his fur.

5- Tend to Your Dog’s Paws

In addition to protecting your dog’s body with clothing, you should protect their paw pads. Winter can be harsh on their paw pads, and sidewalk salt can be very irritating. 

Therefore, consider using a paw balm or wax to insulate and protect your dog’s paws from the elements. There are numerous topical salves or balms to choose from online. However, you can also learn how to make your own paw balm here.

Another barrier to consider using between your dog and the wet, icy cold are booties for their paws. However, not all dogs are fans of wearing booties, but for those that are, they can be beneficial.

For instance, booties trap heat from your dog’s paws and help keep a higher overall body temperature. Therefore, with temperature regulation, your dog’s safety is in check when walking on concrete and through snow.

Thinking about your dog’s paws, keep the hair between their toes clipped short. For instance, ice can accumulate here, causing temporary lameness or making it difficult and painful to walk.

Plus, always wipe your dog’s paws after a winter walk. For instance, use a warm, wet washcloth and a towel to dry, or use pre-moistened pet wipes.

Most importantly, washing removes salt or ice melt chemicals from your dog’s paws. For example, antifreeze has a sweet taste that attracts dogs and could be fatal if ingested. Thus, the importance of washing your dog’s paws, in case they happen to chew or lick them.

6- Stay on the Sidewalk

If there’s snow, stay on cleared sidewalks and trails while on extended winter walks with dogs. For instance, walking through snow is going to make your dog colder much faster. 

To clarify, many dogs don’t have fur on their bellies. Therefore, snow touching this soft, unprotected area will chill them faster. Although many dogs love playing in the snow, save snow jumping for shorter time periods in the backyard.

7- Don’t Let Your Dog Eat Snow While on a Walk

Speaking of snow, it isn’t good for your dog to consume it! You can deter your dog from eating snow by hydrating with water before and during the walk.

Have you ever heard of Winter Blap Disease? It’s what happens after your dog eats a large amount of snow after being thirsty. For instance, your dog will  throw it up after going back inside.

Furthermore, the snow could contain traces of antifreeze, chemicals, or some other contaminant causing harm to your dog. So help prevent your dog from eating snow to alleviate thirst by providing plenty of water.

8- Keep a Tight Leash

When walking anytime of year, it is important to keep your dog on a tight leash. For instance, you don’t want your dog to get away from you on a walk. He or she could get into a dog fight, ran over by a vehicle, or even lost.

However, winter walks with dogs pose a different danger if your dog gets away from you. This is especially so when walking around ice-covered areas, such as frozen lakes or ponds. For instance, there’s no way to know how solid the ice is. Therefore, your dog could fall in.

In Conclusion

The bottom line for winter walks with dogs is to not let cold weather keep your dog from getting exercise. So, when the weather is appropriate, get outside for even 5 to 10 minutes. 

However, if the weather isn’t cooperative, make sure your dog gets sufficient potty breaks. In addition, find indoor activities to keep their minds and bodies active.

Nevertheless, with our helpful tips, you and your dog might just end up loving winter walks! Plus, remember your dog craves your undivided attention, even on walks. So, leave your phone in your pocket and focus on your dog when walking.

Most importantly, safe dog travel requires a calm dog parent from the get go. If you are calm, your dog will be calm. Furthermore, dogs pick up on our stress. So, if you’re nervous and uptight, your dog may be, too.

Safe Dog Travel Includes Health Checks 

Are you planning a long distance, overnight trip? If so, then your dog needs a clean bill of health from the vet. In other words, your dog needs to be healthy enough to travel.

So, take your dog to the vet for a checkup before going on an extended trip. You will want your vet to ensure your dog’s mental and physical shape is good for travel. 

In addition, travel often means your dog will come in contact with other animals. So, be sure to ask your vet about proper vaccinations. Plus, make sure all vaccinations are up to date and carry those shot records with you.

For instance, hotels and other lodging establishments may require showing proof of vaccinations at check-in. In addition, health certifications are required for airline travel.

However, a visit to the vet isn’t the only health preparation that needs to happen when traveling. For example, plan for an emergency, and travel with a dog first aid kit.

In addition, research emergency pet hospitals and local veterinarians in the area you will travel to. Print out the information or add it to your smartphone for easy access.

Lastly, be sure to check your dog’s health en route to and once arriving at your destination. Plus be sure to have plenty of water on hand to prevent dehydration and don’t forget any medications.

Safe Dog Travel Includes Proper Identification 

There’s always the chance you and your dog could be separated while traveling. Therefore, it is important that your dog is wearing a collar with an identification tag. 

Furthermore, the tag  should include your dog’s name, your name, and a cell phone number. Plus, a rabies tag will ensure your dog is safe to be around when someone finds her or him.

Most importantly, an identification tag increases your chance to reunite with your dog. In addition, consider a permanent form of identification, such as a microchip. You can check out information at AKC Reunite.

Another idea is to have a recent photo of your dog with you. These days it is common for people to have photos of their dog on their phone. However, you might consider printing a few photos to hand out in the event your dog is lost.

Safe Dog Travel Includes a Crate

There are several reasons why a crate is important for your dog’s safety when traveling. Firstly, it’s a great way to keep your dog safe when traveling by car. Secondly, it is actually required for airline travel.

Thirdly, a crate keeps your dog safely contained in a hotel room or at your host’s home. There are a few features to consider when purchasing a crate…

• Large enough to allow your dog to stand, turn, and lie down.
• Ventilation on opposite sides with knobs or exterior rims to prevent blocked airflow.
• Leak-proof base covered with absorbent material and no interior protrusions.
• Strong, with handles and grips.
• Label that states “Live Animal”; arrows showing upright position; and space for owner’s name, address, and phone number.

Furthermore, place a comfortable mat inside the crate for your dog with a favorite toy and water bottle.

Safe Dog Travel With Lodging

When it comes to lodging while planning your trip, find out in advance who allows dogs. For instance, many hotels, motels, and short term rentals don’t allow pets. Therefore, you will need to do some research. Plus, some of the places that allow dogs have size restrictions.

If your dog is allowed to stay, make a sweep of the premises ensuring it’s safe for exploring. For example, put the electrical cords out of reach. Furthermore, make sure the previous occupants didn’t leave anything behind that could be potentially harmful to your dog.

In addition, make sure you “doggy-proof” your vacation space before you let your dog have free roam.  Be considerate of other guests and staff by keeping your dog as quiet as possible. 

Your dog might have anxiety staying in a strange place, so don’t leave him or her unattended. Not to mention, they might bark uncontrollably and destroy property that could cause them injury.

Out of all the ways to travel, car travel probably puts the least amount of stress on dogs. However, there are several safety precautions that still need to be accounted for.

Car Travel

Most importantly, consider a dog seat belt, dog car seat, or dog carrier to keep your dog safe. We buckle up our kids for safety, so why not buckle up our furry kids for safety? Over 400,000 people are involved in car accidents each year due to distractions. Furthermore, the distraction is from an unrestrained dog.

Plus, an unrestrained dog is at risk of injury or even death. For example, in a car wreck an unrestrained dog becomes a dangerous projectile thrown by the force. Therefore, they likely will injure themselves and/or others in the car.

Furthermore, a dog sitting in the front seat could be seriously injured or killed by deployed airbags. So if your small dog rides in the front seat, make sure they are in a booster seat. For instance, you don’t want their weight to activate the passenger airbags.

In addition, it is safer for your dog’s entire body to be inside the car even if unrestrained.  Here is a list of the dangers when a dog is hanging out of a car window…

• A dog could lean too far out of the window either in excitement or by accident and fall out.
• Suddenly braking or a car crash could project your dog out of the window.
• Small bugs and pavement gravel are projecting fast and could become lodged in an eye.
• Squirrels and other animals cause excitement and a dog could suddenly jump from a car.
• Passing cars could sideswipe, crushing a dog between the two cars.

So instead, just crack a window. The fresh air and scents will still provide enrichment.

Bus and Train Travel

If you are going to travel by an Amtrak train and want to take your dog along, then you are in luck. However, you are only in luck if your dog is under 20 pounds. Plus, there is a $25 fee and your dog must ride in a carrier under your seat. Therefore, scroll back up and read our tips on carriers to keep your dog safe on a train.

In addition, dogs are not allowed on Greyhound and other interstate bus companies. However, service dogs are permitted. Furthermore, you will have to check with local rail and bus companies for their policies.

• Rabies and vaccination certificates are also required.
• You must make reservations for your dog.
• Dogs are accepted on a first-come, first-serve basis on each flight.
• There are restrictions on the number of animals permitted on each flight.
• A dog must weigh less than 20 pounds to ride in the cabin, however each airline is different.
• Your dog must be in a crate or carrier while in flight. However, each airline has its own variations on regulations and services with crates or carriers.

To keep your dog calm during air travel, you might consider tranquilizing your dog for the trip. Furthermore, it is best to ask your veterinarian what would be best to use or if you should.

In addition, you might want to rethink a trip if your dog is too big to fly in the cabin with you. When dogs have to fly in cargo, it’s extremely stressful for them and, for some, very dangerous.

When it comes to water travel with your dogs, there are a few ways to do so. For instance, you can travel with your dog by personal boats, ferry boats, or cruise ships.

Traveling by water can be a rewarding experience for you and your dog. However, make sure you’re prepared. The following tips can help you keep your dog safe and happy while out on the water…

• Call ahead to make sure the marina or park is dog friendly.
• Provide a ramp for your dog to easily get on and off the boat. If you don’t have a ramp, then plan to carry your dog on and off the boat.
• Provide a shaded area for your dog, because excessive exposure to the sun can cause heatstroke.
• Sunscreen will also help keep your dog from getting sunburned. Your veterinarian can recommend a non-toxic, non-skin irritating sunscreen for pets.
• Provide non-slip bathroom rugs to help keep your dog from sliding on the wet boat. Plus, this will help keep them from burning their paws.
• Consider a carrier, or a harness with leash to prevent your dog from  jumping or falling overboard. Plus, have a plan in place just in case your dog does go overboard.
• Keep a dog first aid kit on board. Furthermore, check with your vet to see what your dog can take for seasickness. Plus, keep plenty of drinking water available.
• Dogs should wear a proper-fitting flotation device at all times to keep them safe. This goes even if they know how to swim.

Importance of Life Jackets for Your Dog

There are no regulations regarding life jackets for dogs. However, a life jacket can help keep your dog safe around any body of water. They are designed to keep a dog afloat in a horizontal, swimming position.

Furthermore, a dog life jacket serves as a retrieval device in the event a dog falls overboard. Lifejackets need to be bright in color to make it easier to see dogs in the water. Plus, they need to fit securely and have lifting handles to make retrieving safer and easier.

Not all dogs can swim and those that can aren’t all great swimmers. Here are a few other reasons why a dog should wear a life jacket around water…

• Water or weather conditions can cause problems, even for a dog that is typically a strong swimmer.
• Any dog can get fatigued or disoriented, especially older dogs can tire easily.
• Dogs with low body fat can have trouble when exposed to water for long periods.
• Health issues, such as hip or joint problems, can also make swimming difficult for some dogs.

Once upon a time, two little old dogs lived in a little old townhouse near the city. The little old dogs were hungry. So, the little old dog mom decided to bake some gingerbread cookies for dogs.

She made a big batch of gingerbread dough just for the little old dogs…

Ha! Ha! There really are so many different story versions of The Gingerbread Man. I was a Kindergarten teacher and I read them all during December.

Furthermore, the gingerbread man delights people of all ages as a cookie during the holidays. So, how about delighting your dog? He or she can join the fun with gingerbread cookies for dogs.

Plus, these gingerbread cookies for dogs are healthy and safe without the granulated sugar. Regular gingerbread is often on the list of foods not to feed dogs. For instance, this is because many gingerbread recipes contain nutmeg, which can be toxic to dogs.

Therefore, this recipe contains no nutmeg and only six dog-safe ingredients. However, if you have questions or concerns about what you’re feeding your dog, always consult your vet.

This was my first time working with ginger and molasses in my homemade dog treat recipes.  Therefore, let’s briefly talk about these two ingredients before getting into how to make gingerbread cookies for dogs.

Have you ever drank ginger ale for an upset tummy? A lot of people do and it’s because of the ginger in it. Furthermore, ginger’s function as a digestive aid for stomach upset and nausea is probably its best known benefit. That goes for humans and dogs alike.

Therefore, ginger may help at early stages of bloat by stimulating movement in your dog’s stomach. For instance, the contents in the stomach move out quicker, preventing build ups.

Furthermore, ginger is a carminative herb. In other words, it can help prevent and expel gas from your dog’s digestive tract.

“The most common use is as an anti-nausea and anti-vomiting supplement, but it has also been used as an anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, circulatory stimulant, and for cognitive support.“

So other than its common use, ginger has also been used as an anti-inflammatory antioxidant and a circulatory stimulant. And, it has been known for supporting the cognitive well being of dogs.

Therefore, it has been used for motion sickness, and side effects of cancer treatment, as in chemotherapy. In addition, it can help with memory problems and osteoarthritis.

Molasses in Gingerbread Cookies for Dogs

Although sweeteners should normally be skipped, a modest helping of this natural sweetener can be an exception. In fact, molasses complements these gingerbread cookies for dogs because it can be consumed in moderation.

Therefore, if consumed in moderation, your dog can derive multiple benefits from molasses. For instance, molasses is rich in essential minerals and vitamins. Therefore, your dog’s immunity and well being can get a boost.

In addition, your dog can get the following benefits from a modest portion of molasses:

• Potassium can help maintain heart health while promoting healthy blood pressure.
• Iron, copper, and selenium are vital for maintaining strong bones and joints.
• Antioxidants are essential in protecting body cells from oxidative stress linked to cancer and other diseases.
• Vitamin B6 can help to digest fats and metabolize amino acids.
• Chromium can improve a dog’s glucose tolerance levels, which can help control diabetes.
• Iron helps keep anemia away.
• Anti-inflammatory properties help ease the discomfort and pain from arthritis and other joint problems.

In addition to making sure your dog consumes molasses in moderation, be sure that it doesn’t contain xylitol. Plus, the molasses must be chemical free to be a healthy supplement.

The healthiest molasses for your dog is blackstrap. For instance it has a lower sugar content than other types of molasses. Plus, it is rich in minerals and vitamins.

When shopping for ingredients for these gingerbread cookies for dogs, I couldn’t find blackstrap molasses. In fact, there was only one brand and type of molasses on the shelf. So, Grandma’s Unsulphured Original Molasses is what I used.

Since I was using the molasses for treats, I knew it would be consumed moderately. Unsulphured is actually the finest quality, so it does have more sugar content than blackstrap.

How to Make Gingerbread Cookies for Dogs

These gingerbread cookies for dogs go by the recipe name, Gingerbread Man Doggy Cookies. These cookie treats were so much fun to make for my fur babies. First of all they made my house smell so Christmassy while they were baking. Second of all, they turned out so cute, even if my decorating skills aren’t professional. They were sure tiny for trying to put little details on. That’s my story and I’m sticking to it. HaHa! Seriously though, let’s look at putting this recipe together. You will need the following ingredients.

Cookie Ingredients for Gingerbread Man Doggy Cookies

• oat flour
• ground cinnamon
• ground ginger
• unsweetened applesauce
• molasses
• olive oil

Icing Ingredients for Gingerbread Man Doggy Cookie

• low or fat free cream cheese
• honey
• low or fat free plain yogurt
• flour, if needed, for thickening
• optional natural food coloring

Steps to Make Gingerbread Man Doggy Cookie

First, preheat your oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit and prepare a baking sheet with parchment or wax paper.

Second, whisk all of the dry ingredients together in a medium bowl. Then, in a small bowl, add the wet ingredients and beat until combined. You can use an electric mixer or stir vigorously with a spoon.

Third, slowly mix the wet ingredient mixture into the dry ingredient mixture. Stir the two mixtures until they are thoroughly combined and uniform in color.

Furthermore, use your hands to finish combining, making sure the dough is a play-doh consistency. For instance, you want it soft and not sticky, but slightly tacky and easy to work with. However, if it is dry and crumbly, add a little water. If the dough is too wet or soft, add extra flour.

Next, form the dough into a dough ball. If you want to make rolling easier, then form two dough balls. Then, place on a non-stick baking mat, parchment paper, or a clean work surface sprinkled with flour. I personally like using parchment paper, but I still sprinkle flour on top.

After that, place parchment paper over the dough ball and begin flattening with a rolling pin. You want to roll the dough until it’s approximately ¼ to ½ inch thickness.

Then cut the dough into shapes using a gingerbread man cookie cutter. However, you can use any cookie cutters of choice. Plus, be sure to reroll the scraps of dough, so none goes to waste.

Next, place the shapes on the prepared baking sheet and bake the cookies for 9 minutes. After 9 minutes, rotate the pan, flip the cookies over, and bake for another 6 minutes. Then, remove from the oven and allow to cool completely on a wire rack before icing.

Steps to Make Gingerbread Man Doggy Cookie Icing

First, blend the cream cheese, honey, and yogurt with an electric mixer until smooth. This is a great consistency for piping onto the cookies.

However, this consistency might not work for you. So, add one tablespoon of flour at a time until you reach a desired consistency.

Then, decorate the cookies the way you see fit. If you want a little color, then add two to three drops of food coloring to the icing. I used white for the eyes, mouth, hair, arms and legs, then alternated red and green for buttons.

If you don’t want to do this extra step of icing, then you can skip it. I promise your dog will love these cookies even without the icing. I shared a plain cookie with each of my dogs and they stood there begging for more.

As always, my favorite part of baking homemade dog treats is sharing them with Bella and Edward. For instance, it is a fun bonding experience with them. Somehow they always know when I’m in the kitchen creating something just for them.

So, when you’re baking delicious goodies for Christmas, don’t forget your dog. Give them a surprise by making these gingerbread cookies for dogs. And while you’re at it, whip up a batch of gingerbread man cookies for the humans.

Then, have a little fun with your family and friends and refuse to tell them which is which. Other than size, these dog treats are indistinguishable to the eye from human treats.

Spoil your doggy this holiday season with these fun and easy gingerbread cookies for dogs. The ginger and molasses in these cookies will tantalize your dog. Plus, the icing is festive bringing the gingerbread men to life.

Ingredients

Cookie Ingredients

• 3 cups oat flour (see note #1)
• 1½ tsp ground cinnamon
• 1½ tsp ground ginger (see note #2)
• ¾ cup unsweetened applesauce (see note #3)
• 3 tbsp  molasses (see note #4)
• 2 tbsp olive oil

Icing Ingredients

• 4 oz cream cheese low or fat-free
• 1 tbsp honey
• 1 to 2 tbsp plain yogurt low or fat-free
• 1 to 3 tbsp oat flour to thicken if needed
• 2 to 3 drops natural food coloring optional

Instructions

Cookie Instructions

• Preheat the oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit, and line a baking sheet with  parchment or wax paper.
• In a medium bowl, whisk the dry ingredients (flour, cinnamon, ginger) together.
• In a small bowl, add the wet ingredients (applesauce, molasses, and oil) and beat until combined.
• Slowly mix the wet ingredient mixture into the dry ingredient mixture, stirring until thoroughly combined and uniform in color.
• Use your hands to finish combining, making sure the dough is a play-doh consistency (see note #5), and form into a dough ball.
• Place the dough ball on a non-stick baking mat, parchment paper, or a clean work surface sprinkled with flour. (Separate the dough into separate dough balls for easier rolling.)
• Place a piece of parchment paper over the dough ball and use a rolling pin to flatten the dough until it is approximately ¼ to ½ inch thickness.
• Use a gingerbread man cookie cutter or cookie cutters of choice to cut shapes. (Be sure to reroll the scraps of dough, so none goes to waste.)
• Place the shapes on the prepared baking sheet between ½ inch to 1 inch apart.
• Bake the cookies for 9 minutes. Rotate the pan, flip the cookies over, and bake on the other side for another 6 minutes.
• Remove from the oven and allow to cool completely on a wire rack before icing.

Icing Instructions

• In a small mixing bowl, blend the cream cheese, honey, and yogurt until smooth.
• Mix in one tablespoon of flour at a time until you reach a desired consistency for spreading or piping onto cookies.
• For an optional effect, add two to three drops of food coloring to the icing and mix.
• Decorate the cookies as you see fit.

Notes

#1 – You can substitute the oat flour with other grain or gluten free flours. If your dog isn’t wheat sensitive, then you can use whole wheat flour. I do not recommend all purpose flour. If you substitute flour, then start with 1 cup and add to the batter as needed.

#2 – Do not use gingerbread spice that contains nutmeg, clove, and allspice. Nutmeg is toxic for dogs. Clove and allspice contain a compound called eugenol, which is toxic for cats, and could put dogs at risk.

#3 – If you can find blackstrap molasses, use it because it is less sweet than any other molasses. If you can’t, then use dark molasses over light molasses. The light molasses contains the most sugar. Plus, read the labels to make sure there is no xylitol or other artificial sweeteners.

#4 – Make sure the applesauce is unsweetened. Check labels for xylitol, because it is toxic to dogs. You can replace the ¾ unsweetened applesauce with 3 eggs.

#5 – The dough texture is similar to play-doh, soft and not sticky, but slightly tacky and easy to work with. If the dough is dry and crumbly, try adding ½ teaspoon at a time of water until easy to work with. If the dough is wet, or too soft, try adding 1 tablespoon at a time of flour until easy to work with.

#6 – Store the cookie in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to two weeks, or the freezer for up to a month.

#7 – Your dog will love these cookies even without the icing, so feel free to skip it.

Oh! How I love the Christmas movies and commercials that portray someone gifting a dog. Just the sight of an adorable puppy wearing a big red bow, waiting anxiously, melts my heart. Then, the recipient enters the scene, bursting into happy tears, giving me a warm, fuzzy feeling. 

However, the movies and commercials only show part of the story! There is a right way to gifting a dog whether it’s at Christmas or another special occasion.

If gifting a dog is in your plans this Christmas, then you need to prepare. Most importantly, that cute little puppy with the red bow comes with a lot of responsibility. So, being a dog parent, no matter what age, needs to be taken seriously.

For instance, animal shelters all over the country deal with thousands of dogs given as gifts. Unfortunately, their recipients surrender them after the newness wears off and responsibility sets in.

Therefore, a giver needs to understand how to responsibly bring a dog into a recipient’s life.

Tips for Gifting a Dog at Christmas

Don’t get me wrong, gifting a dog can be a wonderful gift, but not always a wonderful surprise. Recipients should be ready for a living and breathing gift that requires a 10 to 15 year commitment. So, it takes some planning on the giver’s side and below you will find some tips to help.

1 – Christmas Dogs Should be Planned Gifts

I get it! The image of a puppy with a bow, sitting under the tree on Christmas morning is adorable. However, it’s not the best choice for the dog or the recipient.  A family dog is a lifelong commitment to bonding and responsibility.

Therefore, gifting a dog should never be a surprise, but rather a planned gift. Although dogs bring joy to life, not everyone has the time, energy, money, or interest in one.

At one time, the ASPCA was against the practice of even gifting a dog under any circumstance. However, after a survey to learn more about people who acquire pets as gifts, they support the practice.

The ASPCA recommends “the giving of pets as gifts only to people who expressed a sustained interest in owning one, and the ability to care for it responsibly.”

Furthermore, they emphasize that pets should ideally come from responsible animal shelters, rescue organizations, or other trusted sources.

So, instead of surprising a family member with a dog, take the whole family to choose one together. With so many dogs waiting in shelters, you can bring holiday cheer to your family member while saving a dog’s life.

Plus, if your recipient wants a specific breed, an adoption counselor can let you know what’s available. I Heart Dogs found that it’s not at all uncommon to find purebred dogs in local shelters.

Furthermore, they used Petfinder’s self-reported data about the breeds more commonly available. Following are the 15 most common purebreds found in shelters, according to I Heart Dogs.

If you don’t find what you’re looking for at a local shelter, try checking out breed specific shelters. In addition, when adopting, you save two lives. You save the dog you bring home and the dog you make space for at the shelter.

2 – Be Aware of the Time and Financial Commitment

After the excitement of Christmas morning wears off, the real work of being a dog parent begins. In other words, a new dog means a whole lot of responsibility. So, an unprepared recipient may not be up to the challenge.

Before gifting a dog, think about the time and financial commitment that will be placed on your recipient. For instance, consider the resources needed to care for a dog  and what it will truly cost.

A few things to consider are:

• food and treats
• veterinary care
• toys, bedding, bath supplies
• walking, boarding, or dog sitting costs
• time and energy for house and obedience training
• maintaining a schedule that meets the dog’s needs

According to the ASPCA, 3.9 million dogs are relinquished to shelters in the U.S. every year. In addition, 20% of that is because their families don’t have enough time, or can’t handle behavior issues.

Therefore, you should be as sure as possible that your recipient is ready for your gift. You sure don’t want the dog you give to become part of the 20%.

3 – Questions to Ask Yourself Before Gifting a Dog 

Ask yourself these questions to ensure your gift is what your recipient wants and can prepare for.

• Can the recipient commit to 10 to 15 years of caring for a dog?
• Is the recipient allergic to dog dander?
• Will the recipient have the financial resources to provide the dog with proper care, including veterinary visits?
• Does the recipient live in a rental, and if so, are dogs allowed?
• Has the recipient expressed an interest in wanting a dog?
• Does the recipient have time for exercise, interaction, and play with the dog?
• Does the recipient have other pets in the household? If so, will they get along with a new dog?
• Will a dog be a good match for the recipient’s lifestyle?

So, by answering these questions, you can determine if your recipient is ready for a dog. If they are, then you can plan your gift by opening a conversation about dogs with your recipient.

 Are you set on the “element of surprise” Christmas morning? You can still achieve it by giving the gift of dog planning. Read on for some ideas on how your recipient can still have a surprise without the actual dog.

4 – Consider Giving a Dog Starter Kit Instead

It’s still possible to surprise your recipient on Christmas morning by giving a dog starter kit. For instance, it will be like a surprise promise! Your recipient will see a kit full of supplies that say, “You’re getting a dog, so get ready!”

Therefore, important family planning and discussions can take place. For example, everyone needs to agree on how to care for the new four-legged family member. Plus, it’s important for family members to decide on who does what “caring for” responsibilities.

Your dog starter kit for your recipient can be as big or small as you want it to be. In addition, you can place dog care items in a basket, a wrapped box, or a backpack.

• fun assortment of dog toys and dog treats
• collar and leash

• stuffed dog as a stand-in for now
• pet first aid kit

Are you set on having a planned gift of a dog under the tree on Christmas morning? If so, then you will want to make sure the recipient is prepared with supplies. For example, have food, bowls, bedding, toys, a collar and leash, ready to go.

In addition, plan for the dog to have adjustment time while accustoming to the new environment. For instance, a safe space needs to be set up for the dog to rest and feel comfortable.

Furthermore, the recipient’s family needs to dog proof their home before the furry arrival. Lastly, have a surrender plan in place. Although you hope it won’t come to that, you should plan for the possibility.

What do you do when you have eight black bananas? I will tell you what I do. First, I make some yummy, mini loaves of banana nut bread for my husband. However, I can’t forget about Bella and Edward! So, I whip up some banana nut muffins for dogs.

I always use pecans in my banana nut bread. However, after some research, I knew pecans would not work in these banana nut muffins for dogs. For instance, the Spruce Pets blog suggests not sharing pecans with your dog.  

Their reasoning is pecans are considered to be toxic to dogs due to their ability to grow mold. Therefore, this could lead to GI distress, intestinal blockages, or other serious symptoms like seizures.

But, I want these banana nut muffins for dogs to have nuts! Why? I love pecans in my banana nut bread, so I want my dogs to experience the same. Plus, nuts are beneficial for humans and some nuts can be for dogs.

How to Achieve a Nut Flavor in Banana Nut Muffins for Dogs

So, my research began! For instance, it was easy to rule out any nuts in their nut form, because of choking hazards. Therefore, came the idea to use a nut butter to create banana nut muffins for dogs.

Bella is allergic to peanuts, so peanut butter is off the list in any recipes for her. My go to nut butter is almond butter when creating her treats. Therefore, deciding on almond butter for these banana nut muffins for dogs proves a great choice.

By the way, almond butter and peanut butter are great for pill giving. Bella takes three pills in the morning and evening for congestive heart failure.  So, with peanut butter off the shelf, almond butter is great for replacing it.

Although almond butter is not toxic for dogs, some dogs’ digestive systems can’t handle it. Therefore, be cautious in giving almond butter to your dog. You don’t want your dog to have an upset tummy, or other gastric issue.

However, these banana nut muffins for dogs only contain a half cup of almond butter. Furthermore, that half cup is dispersed through 20 mini muffins. Therefore, each treat doesn’t contain very much almond butter. However, still be cautious.

Banana Nut Muffins for Dogs Are Healthy With Almond Butter

Some nuts can be beneficial for dogs and almonds happen to be one of those. However, you want to be sure they are in a butter form and not a nut form. If you have given your dog a taste and they tolerate almond butter, then there are some benefits.

Benefits of Almond Butter

• B3 provides a shiny coat, healthy eyes, and liver
• Vitamin E helps fight free radicals to decrease cancer risk
• Immune system is stronger due to vitamin E content
• Calcium and phosphorus help with healthy bones and joints

However, make sure the almond butter doesn’t contain any additional oils, salt, sugar, or another sweetener like honey. In addition, avoid reduced almond butter or any almond butter containing Xylitol. 

Xylitol is an artificial sweetener that can be fatal for your dog. This goes for peanut butter, too!

Let’s Bake Banana Nut Muffins for Dogs

This recipe for banana nut muffins for dogs is called, “Banana Nut ‘Mutt’fins’.” I love to make a play on words with dog references. So, when I get an opportunity to do that in my recipe titles, I have fun doing it.

Ingredients for Banana Nut Muffins for Dogs

• coconut flour
• chia seeds
• cinnamon
• coconut oil
• almond butter
• eggs
• mashed banana

Directions to Follow for Banana Nut Muffins for Dogs

Firstly, preheat your oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit and prepare a mini muffin pan with cooking spray. I love baking with silicone pans. So, if you use a silicone muffin pan, you will not need to use cooking spray.

Secondly, whisk together the coconut flour, chia seeds, and cinnamon in a small mixing bowl. Then, beat the eggs with a fork in another bowl. To this, add the coconut oil, almond butter, and mashed banana.

Thirdly, add the dry ingredients to the wet ingredients. Then, mix all of the ingredients together with a spoon until thoroughly combined. Your batter should be a little thick.

However, the consistency of the batter will depend on the eggs and the almond butter. For instance, eggs labeled large aren’t always large and sometimes they are either medium or extra large.

Furthermore, the almond butter consistency seems to be different with every brand. Some are thick and creamy, yet some are very oily making the consistency runny. The brand I have on hand right now happens to be runny.

So, my batter was not thick and the muffins turned out great. However, if you want a thicker batter, you can add a little more coconut flour.

Fourthly, spoon the batter in the muffin pan cups until full and bake for 25 minutes. The muffins will not rise, so it’s okay to fill them to the top. After they bake, the muffins will be dense.

Next, remove the muffins from the oven and transfer to a wire rack to cool.

Lastly, store the muffins in an airtight container once they are completely cool. They will keep for up to two weeks,  if you place the container in the refrigerator. In addition, you can freeze them for up to four weeks.

In Conclusion

My favorite part of baking these banana nut muffins for dogs is sharing them with Bella and Edward. They always love the treats their momma bakes them. Plus, it’s a bonding experience for us. 

They seem to always know when I’m baking something for them. For instance, they are right under foot while I’m preparing. So, of course I talk to them about what I’m doing. 

Murphy and his sister, Izzy got to eat some muffins, too! Bella and Edward shared treats (muffins) for Halloween, since these were baked close to the holiday.

Banana Nut Mutt-fins

This recipe yields 20 mini muffins. Your dog will love these bread-like treats made with bananas and almond butter. For a small dog, you might just want to give them a ¼ to ½ of a mini muffin at a time.

Servings 1 mini muffin

Calories 1548kcal

Ingredients

• ½ cup coconut flour
• 1 tbsp chia seeds
• 1 tsp cinnamon
• 1 tbsp coconut oil
• ½ cup almond butter
• 2 large eggs
• 1 mashed banana

Instructions

• Preheat the oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit and prep a mini muffin pan with cooking spray. (see note #1)
• In a small mixing bowl, whisk together the coconut flour, chia seeds, and cinnamon.
• In another bowl, beat the eggs with a fork, then add the coconut oil, almond butter, and mashed banana.
• Add the dry ingredients to the wet ingredients. Mix together with a spoon until thoroughly combined.  (see note #2)
• Spoon the batter into the muffin pan cups until full. (see note #3)
• Bake for 25 minutes.

Halloween is a frighteningly fun holiday for our families! However, for our furry family members, it can be dreadfully frightening and not so fun. Therefore, following a few Halloween tips for dogs can make the holiday a little less frightening.

If you have an anxiety ridden dog, then you know how Halloween can be downright scary and stressful. One of my dogs suffers from anxiety, so these Halloween tips for dogs are a necessity.

Furthermore, Halloween can be dangerous for dogs, so the safety precautions in these tips is a must. Trick or treat, but keeping your dog safe doesn’t have to be tricky. Plus, these Halloween tips for dogs are a treat for dog parents!

5 Halloween Tips for Dogs to Help With Stress

These first three Halloween tips for dogs will help with stress and anxiety. The last two tips will help you keep your dog safe this holiday. 

1- Be Costume Conscious

There are some dogs out there who absolutely love to dress up! For instance, my friend’s dog, Jerry, adores being in hats, scarves, and various garments! And Jerry suffers from traumatic anxiety. Maybe the outfits make him feel more secure. Who knows? But his mom says he prances around in outfits like he is super proud. This makes me laugh!

Maybe you also have a dog who loves dressing up! Therefore, costumes can be super fun. Plus, they make great social media photos. I mean, who doesn’t love looking at all of the adorable dogs in their Halloween costumes?

However, for most anxiety ridden dogs, a costume causes more stress. So it is important to know if your dog enjoys dressing up like Jerry does. If you aren’t sure then have your dog try on the costume before Halloween night. 

You will know if he or she seems distressed by noticing any abnormal behavior. Therefore, you can consider letting your dog wear nothing or sport a fun bandana instead. 

The ASPCA recommends that you don’t put your dog or cat in a costume unless you know he or she loves it.  

On the other hand, if your dog enjoys it then there are some safety precautions to consider.

• Comfy is best
• Doesn’t restrict movement, breathing, hearing or sight
• Check costume for small, dangling or easily chewed-off pieces to avoid choking
• Make sure it will not get twisted on your dog or external objects that could lead to injury
• Be wary of costumes that use rubber bands to stay in place to avoid choking or intestinal injury if swallowed

2- Minimize the Noise

If your dog suffers from anxiety, then children in costumes screaming with excitement will be stressful or confusing. Plus, a doorbell ringing can upset or excite an anxiety ridden dog.

Therefore, consider disabling your doorbell for the evening. Or, at least cover it with a friendly note asking little visitors to knock for their treats. In addition, consider setting up a motion detector to know when trick-or-treaters are approaching your door.

My dog goes crazy when he hears a doorbell ring, so our doorbell is on permanent disconnection! Furthermore, we continuously work on this by following these ideas, because even a television doorbell sets him off.

Another noise minimizing idea is to keep your dog in a separate room. For instance, create a safe space away from the front door during peak trick-or-treating hours.

In reality, only the most social dogs should be near all of the commotion at the front door. For instance, your anxiety ridden dog may find the visitors terrifying and dart through the open door. 

Furthermore, even if your dog doesn’t suffer from anxiety, he or she may feel the need to protect. And, you don’t want one of your spooky guests to be bitten.

3 – Greet and Treat Outdoors

In addition to a ringing doorbell, knocking on the door can upset your dog. Plus, a door opening and closing continuously to noisy people can be stressful for your dog.

Therefore, consider sitting outside to greet your trick-or-treaters. If the weather permits, you can hand out treats outdoors to avoid the noise at the door.

Have you heard of trunk-or-treat? It involves a community coming together in a parking lot with open, decorated car trunks. Children can trick-or-treat out of the trunks in a safe environment.

So, an idea for greeting your trick-or-treaters outdoors is to revamp your car trunk and driveway. What a treat this could be for your spooky, little visitors!

Safety Halloween Tips for Dogs
