Whether baking for your doggo’s birthday or just for fun, these pupcakes for dogs will be a hit! I mean, afterall, a pupcake is a yummy cupcake. So, if hoomans love cupcakes, doesn’t it make sense that doggos would love pupcakes?
In addition, these aren’t just any pupcakes, they are bone shaped pupcakes. Dogs don’t bury these bones! Instead, they gulp them down with approval.
I was crazy excited when I randomly found a bone shaped tin at my local Target store. So, I knew I had to make some bone shaped pupcakes for dogs.
Decisions, Decisions!
I had no idea what kind of pupcakes for dogs I wanted to make! I looked around my kitchen and spotted a couple of bananas too brown for my liking. Plus, I had a jar of unsweetened applesauce in the refrigerator.
Fortunately, those are two ingredients I like to use in my “sweeter” side dog treats. So, I concocted a recipe to use them and my new tin.
Bananas and applesauce, both have health benefits for dogs. You can read about those in Homemade Baked Banana Chips For Dogs and Yum! Apple Cookies – Easy Treat Recipe For Dogs.
Another healthy ingredient I chose to use in these pupcakes for dogs is honey.
5 Health Benefits of Honey For Your Dog
- Alleviates allergies
- Heals wounds
- Soothes Kennel Cough
- Aids digestion
- Boosts energy level
Honey is Packed With Beneficial Nutrients
- Sugars, such as fructose and glucose
- Enzymes needed to accelerate chemical reactions within the body
- Minerals like zinc, iron, manganese, phosphate, calcium, copper, sodium, magnesium, and potassium
- Vitamins: B complex, C, D, E, and K
- Antioxidants, such as phenolic acids and flavonoids
- Pollen grains that can be helpful with environmental allergies
Therefore, this ingredient is in both the batter and the drizzle of these pupcakes for dogs.
Are you wondering if the quality of the honey matters?
It does!
In fact, you really should use a raw, local honey or an organic honey. The honey found in most supermarkets is made with a high fructose corn syrup that has been processed.
To clarify, it is heated and quickly cooled down. The purpose of this is to appear smoother inside the bottle. However, the problem with heating the honey is it loses health benefits.
I should also mention that the quantity matters too. Since honey has a high sugar content, it can possibly lead to obesity and tooth decay in dogs. Therefore, avoid giving your doggo too much honey.
These pupcakes for dogs will not have enough honey to be harmful. But, as with any treat, avoid giving too many. According to the American Kennel Club, treats should not make up more than 10 percent of your dog’s diet.
Banana Apple Pupcakes
What You Need to Make the Pupcakes
- bananas
- unsweetened applesauce
- egg
- honey
- vanilla
- baking powder
- almond flour
- rice flour
- cinnamon
- water
What You Need to Make the Drizzle
- peanut butter
- honey
- cinnamon
Let’s Get to Baking
Before you start putting the ingredients together, preheat the oven to 350 degrees.
Firstly, mash the bananas with a potato masher or a fork.
Then, add all of the other ingredients and mix well. (Batter will be a little lumpy from the bananas.)
Next, spoon the batter into the bone shaped compartments of the tin. (I filled to the top, because I wanted a chewy, cake-like texture.)
After that, put the tin in the oven and bake for seven to ten minutes. (A good rule of thumb to follow before taking out, is to insert a toothpick in the middle. If it comes out clean, the pupcakes are done. If it doesn’t, then leave them in the oven a little longer.)
Let the pupcakes thoroughly cool before adding the peanut butter drizzle. (Notice Bella in the picture patiently waiting for these treats to be finished.)
Lastly, after the pupcakes are thoroughly cool, add the peanut butter drizzle.
Then, the best part is feeding them to your fur babies. Bella, and her brother, Edward were ready for more when they finished all of their pupcakes.
I caught a small tongue approval from Edward.
In Conclusion
I made a trip the next day to see my daughter. She doesn’t have kids yet, but she does have fur kids. So, of course, I packaged up some pupcakes for them.
Who are the good boys in this picture? My grand”fur”kids of course.
On command, Titus shows he can sit patiently and wait for his treat and Odi shows he can stand on his back legs for his treat. They both approved of their grandmom’s pupcakes.
Zoe and Abby are always willing taste testers for our Snoot & Toebeans’ treats. Their mom said they give these pupcakes an A+ grade.

Can you use regular flour instead
Hi Cheryl,
Yes. All purpose flour works for this recipe. I use other flours to add nutritional value to the treats. However, the all purpose does work.

Made these for my shihtzus (sans cinnamon as I don’t have them on hand) using the smallest muffin pan. I gave them one each and they enjoyed it very much – still wanting more. Thank you for posting this recipe.
Hi Irene,
You are so welcome! I’m so happy your shihtzus enjoyed their pupcakes and I’m so happy you enjoyed baking for them. Thank you for sharing your experience.
