Don’t throw out the too ripe bananas! Instead, create homemade baked banana chips that you and your doggo can enjoy. Bananas have a delicious taste your fur baby will love. In addition to being tasty, bananas have a few health benefits for our furriest family members.
Health Benefits From Bananas
Bananas are a great, heart-healthy treat for both dogs and people.
- Contains a natural source of Vitamin B6 and Vitamin C.
- Vitamin C helps combat cataracts, glaucoma, kennel cough, joint inflammation, and arthritis.
- Vitamin B6 regulates blood cell function.
- Bananas are high in fiber, potassium, and magnesium.
- Fiber is great for digestion and helps remedy gastrointestinal problems.
- Potassium is great for muscle and blood vessel function, as well as maintaining a proper balance of fluids throughout the body.
- Magnesium promotes bone growth and helps the body absorb vitamins and protein.
- A dog’s immune system gets a boost from eating bananas.
- Bananas promote a beautiful and healthy skin and coat.
The Downside of Bananas
You have probably already guessed the downside to bananas. Yep, it’s sugar. Darn that sugar!
Bananas contain three types of natural sugar:
- fructose
- sucrose
- glucose
However, don’t let the sugar deter you from letting your fur baby indulge in this yummy fruit. Just don’t give your dog too much, especially if he or she has weight problems.
Many veterinarians recommend bananas as a treat instead of the salty and fatty commercial treats. Bananas are rich in potassium and low in sodium and cholesterol, making them a healthier choice.
“Bananas are one of many fruits that are safe for dogs to eat. The popular fruit is a healthy treat you can serve once in a while, or add as a topping to the base of your dog’s favorite food.”
Dr. Danielle Bernal
Veterinarian with Wellness Natural Pet Food.
How About Banana Chips?
Yes, banana chips are safe for your doggo. They are rich in vitamin B6 and C, dietary fiber and potassium. In addition, they can help provide an energy boost.
Moderation is the key when feeding your doggo part of a banana or banana chips. The high amount of fiber found in the banana can cause diarrhea or upset stomach if your dog eats too much.
When purchasing commercial banana chips, make sure they do not contain any artificial sweeteners. If you have a medium or large size dog, offer about six to 10 chips, and if you have a small dog, don’t give more than three banana chips at one time.
However, for peace of mind, create your own homemade baked banana chips.

Next, dip each slice into the orange juice, and place it on the pan.
After that, sprinkle the top of the slices with the ceylon cinnamon.
Thirdly, bake for 3 to 4 hours. (Flip your chips halfway through the cooking process. Your chips should be dry and brown.)
Lastly, remove from the oven, and once cool, serve a chip or two to your fur baby.
