homemade banana dog treats

My two fur baby Morkies literally go bananas when I peel a banana in the mornings for my oatmeal. They love it when I cut off a slice to share with them. Bella and Edward also love it when I make them these homemade banana dog treats. This easy recipe includes bananas and oats, so they can have their own version of my yummy breakfast.

Pinterest is a great place to find dog treat recipes. This homemade banana dog treats recipe was originally a 2-ingredient recipe with bananas and oats. I tweaked it to add a little more flavor and nutritive value.

Extra Two Ingredients – Cinnamon and Olive Oil

You can’t go wrong adding cinnamon and olive oil to any dog treat recipe. For instance, cinnamon can regulate blood sugar and raise insulin resistance, therefore preventing diabetes. Plus, it tastes yummy!

In addition, olive oil is known as brain food for dogs helping prevent the cognitive decline in aging dogs. Bella and Edward are 10 and 8, so I try to add a little olive oil to their diet whenever I can.

Original Two Ingredients – Oats and Bananas

Oats and bananas are found in a lot of homemade dog treat recipes.

Oats, in particular, are a good choice of grain for pets, according to Dr. Richard Pitcairn, DVM, PhD.

Why add oats to dog treats?

  • quick-cooking
  • contain more protein per calorie than any other common grain
  • anti-inflammatory and skin-soothing properties
  • calming effect on the nervous system
  • helps strengthen the spleen, pancreas, immune system, and the heart
  • rich in silicon, which helps make bones strong (you might be interested in reading more about silicon and bone health)
  • acidic, so not likely to cause allergies
  • tolerated by the largest number of dogs

Bananas are a great source of potassium, magnesium, vitamin C, vitamin B6, fiber, biotin, and copper. However, they should be given in moderation, because too much of this good thing can cause constipation.

Why add bananas to dog treats?

  • boosts the immune system
  • replenishes electrolytes
  • promotes skin and coat health.

How to Make Homemade Banana Dog Treats

Ingredients for Go Bananas! Biscuits

homemade banana dog treats
  • 3 bananas
  • 4 cups oats
  • 3 teaspoons cinnamon
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil

Steps to Make Go Bananas! Biscuits

First, preheat your oven to 225 degrees Fahrenheit.

Then, mash the bananas. I use a potato masher, but a fork will work just as well.

Next, mix in the oats, cinnamon, and olive oil with a spoon. Stir until it starts to pull away from the bowl and is well blended.

After that, cover the bowl and let the dough rest for 5 minutes, allowing the oats to expand.

I lined my counter with wax paper. Then, I took a small amount of dough and mashed with my fingers until I got them the thickness I wanted.

I used these adorable little cookie cutters I found at my local Michael’s craft store. However, I ended up using only the bone, dog, and paw shapes.

On a side note, the next time I make these, I am going to roll the dough out to get it a little thinner than what my fingers could do.

I added a little extra touch to the paw print shape, because I wanted it to have the impression of the bottom of a paw pad. With a small straw I added the top four sections and with a larger straw, I added the larger section.

In addition, I put the shapes on a flat cookie sheet. I used my Pampered Chef pizza stone. Bake at 225 degrees for 25 minutes, then flip them over and bake for another 20 minutes.

Lastly, let the biscuits thoroughly cool before sharing with your fur baby.

Bella and Edward Gave Their Approval All Week Long

This is always the best part of making homemade dog treats. It’s time to share with your favorite fur babies.

I also shared by taking biscuits in zip-lock baggies to my work to all of the dog moms. They said their fur babies love these homemade banana dog treats. Then, I put the remainder in the freezer, so I can spoil Bella and Edward later with them.

  2. Hello I tried these and Luna and pebbles love them!
How can I store these treats and how many can they have in a day?

    1. Hi Jeyani,
I’m so happy that Luna and Pebbles love the treats. I have found that homemade dog treats last two to three weeks by placing them in an airtight container or a baggie and storing them in the refrigerator. You can also freeze them and thaw out a few at a time if you want. The amount they can have will depend on your dog’s size and the size you make the treats. I give my small dogs two to three small treats throughout the day, such as one in the morning, sometimes one in the afternoon, and one after dinner. Thank you for trying out the recipe and for asking the questions.

      1. Getting ready to make these dog treats, can I use steel cut oatmeal? The ingredients say 100% whole grain Irish Oats?

        1. Hi Betty,
I’m glad you are about to make these dog treats for your fur baby! You can use steel cut oats. I didn’t specify in my recipe what kind. From the photos, I can tell I used old fashioned oats. Most of my other recipes I use organic rolled oats. Just make sure you don’t use instant oats, because they contain sugar.

Hi. While the dogs apparently like the taste, these little nuggets just don’t hold together well. There are pieces of oatmeal all over the stovetop and floor because the treats just don’t gel. I’d highly recommend more than just the bananas for holding it all together!

    1. Hi Susan,
I am certainly glad your dogs like the taste. However, I am sad they did not hold together for you. Did you allow the dough to rest for 5 minutes, allowing the oats to expand? If you did, then you could try adding a flour such as wheat or oat. Start by adding a 1/4 cup and knead, then continuing adding until you feel like the dough has the right consistency. I hope it turns out better the next time around. Thank you for reading and baking for your dogs. Tell them I said, hi!

    1. Hi Mhean,

I am glad you asked this question. The American Kennel Club advises owners to stay away from instant oatmeal. While it’s faster and easier to prepare, it’s highly processed, and the health benefits your dog gets from eating oats will decrease.

    1. Hi Kaycee,
Absolutely, you can use coconut oil. Coconut oil has lots of benefits for dogs too! Tell your dog I said Hi!

    1. Hi Jan,
I’m so glad Max loved them. That’s awesome that you and your daughter tasted them! I always try the dog treats I make. Some of the them smell so good baking. And, yeah they taste pretty good, but not great to us humans. Tell Max I said, “Hi!”

  4. How do these have to be stored and how long do they last? My grand pup son cannot have any protein for now and unless we make him treats he can’t have them. He has an autoimmune disease. Thank you!

    1. Hi Susan,
I’m so glad you reached out. I’m also sorry that your grand pup son has an autoimmune disease. To answer your question, I have found that homemade dog treats last two to three weeks by placing them in an airtight container or a baggie and storing them in the refrigerator. These are great!
Easy, healthy and the fur babies love them! Thanks for sharing

(I can also use up my over ripe bananas up)

    1. Yay! I’m so glad your fur babies love them! Yep! Every time I have over-ripe bananas I make something for my doggos! However, last time I did make banana bread for my husband and he was shocked! LOL!
