Every dog is an individual! So, when it comes to road tripping with your dog, it is important to remember just that. Each dog has their own unique personality with a set of quirks that define that personality. They are just like us humans, some are natural homebodies and some are natural go-getters.
Whether, road tripping with your dog across town or the country, you will need to follow some tips. Therefore, you and your furry passenger can have a safe and happy road trip together.
19 Tips For Road Tripping With Your Dog
✽Before the Trip
1. Make a couple of short trips, like maybe around the block. The key is to have a fun ending, such as a novel treat or a new toy given inside the car.
2. Keep feeding schedules as normal as possible.
3. However, don’t feed a meal or a lot of treats prior to the trip. This will save a big mess if your dog gets car-sick.
4. If you have an anxious dog, try spraying naturally relaxing pheromones on a blanket. A natural spray can be found at a pet store, from a vet, or online.
5. Does your dog experience high anxiety such as excessive panting, drooling, out-of-control barking or vomiting? If so, get a veterinarian’s assistance with medication, natural remedies or solutions.
6. Exercise your dog before putting him or her in the car.
7. Put a favorite toy or blanket in the crate.
8. Pack a few treats for rewarding.
9. Have water and a travel bowl handy to keep your dog hydrated.
10. Don’t force your dog into a car if they are showing hesitancy. But, rather move at your dog’s pace – slow and steady. Of course, if it is an emergency, you will have to use force if your dog is hesitant.
✽During the Trip
11. Keep your dog safe inside the car while you are driving. For example, use a crate or carrier, or use a harness to secure to a seat belt. This is not only for your dog’s safety but for you as the driver. For instance, you do not want to have any interference around the steering wheel.
12. Stay calm when your dog makes noises such as barking or howling. There is no need to worry unless it becomes excessive and accompanied by panting, drooling and vomiting.
13. Create a calm environment inside the vehicle by playing soothing music.
14. Realize that sometimes you will just have to ride it out with an anxious dog passenger.
15. Take breaks every couple of hours to let your dog relieve themselves and to stretch. Don’t wait until they are noticeably uncomfortable and whining.
✽During Trip Breaks
17. When your dog is outside of the vehicle, make sure they are wearing a collar with i.d. tags. Furthermore, make sure they are securely on a leash with you.
18. Most of all, be sure to clean up after your dog.
19. Keep in mind, your dog may feel overwhelmed from riding in the car. In this case, do not feel bad telling a passerby not to pet or touch your dog.
In Conclusion
So, no matter what their personality is, road tripping with your dog is doable. In addition, it can be lots of fun. Above all, just remember your dog is an individual. When traveling with them, you need to consider their needs first and foremost for a smooth ride.
